I own a lovley 15h gelding, l/w bordering m/w cob 9 yrs old

I have had him 2 yrs and we have been building up the confidence and have got there. We hack for 2 hours over local forest. Have a lesson a week with a dressage instructor and have a jumping lesson once a month.

He my horse of a life time I waited 33 odd yrs for him!!

Having said all that, I am now finding him hard work as I want to move up a leval nothing huge just need him to be a bit more off the leg. I have increased his feed to 1 scoup mix, 1 scoup chaff and he is on grass over night then in during the day.

When schooling I wear spurs and do lots of walk to trot, halt to walk etc and I have seen a improvment so has instructor.

Out hacking he can be very lazy should I wear my spurs whilst hacking?

Should I be feeding him up to help with the engery level but I dont want him spooky.

Any advice very welcome

Have a similar problem and have been advised to try Staypower cubes by Dodson and Horrell. Why dont you ring a feed company and ask for advice?

Sorry should have said just normal mix, non heating, normal feed shops own brand just depends where YO buys it from

as long as he doesnt put weight on really easily then i would defo go for dodson and horrell build up i fed this to my 13.2 and it put weight on him but did make him alot more energetic but i dont think it would put tons of wieght on if the horse was worked often. but i will say that my gran feeds it to some of her youngsters and it sends the loopey but they are welsh Bs and dont do any work. it also makes their coats fab

I had the same problem with my horse but found schooling was the answer rather than feeding.

I did lots of work to sharpen up his response to my leg aids and it made the world of difference. Increased energy just sends my horse silly rather than having any constructive use!
