May be you could speak to Spillers - they recommended slow release energy cubes for putting on condition for my elderly mare who has cushings(strange I know!!!)- it has no starch and high levels of oil. I feed them to all of my horses, they're really good!
Dodson & Horrell Country Cubes are high protein with low starch ie barley free and my laminitic cob had 2 scoops a day last winter and had plenty of energy for hunting twice a week without getting silly.
What is your horse on now? I'm assuming his/her weight is ok and you're looking for a bit of extra sparkle when ridden without bringing on laminitis or putting on weight. That really is the holy grail!! Unfortunately for extra oomph the types of feeds that provide it are quick feeds that release energy quickly, so cereals - definitely NOT what you want to go near with a laminitic. I personally think the only thing you can do is make sure they aren't overweight as that can make horses have a bit less oomph, make sure they're as fit as possible with a varied workload and make sure if they aren't getting a full ration of a concentrated feed that contains vits and mins that you are feeding a vit and min supplement. Really sorry but I'm sure you'll agree that control of the laminitis has to come first and I don't think there is a magic feed that will provide extra sparkle and oomph without adding calories or starch.
If they're lacking in energy generally and maybe need to put some weight on but you're concerned about the laminitis then fibre and oil are the way to go but as they're both good for keeping horses calm then they're not going to give you oomph, unless your horse is struggling for energy generally and actually needs more calories in thier diet which I'm guessing isn't the case.
Yes I agree. My fatty cob is on 2 scoops of Baileys. I reaslied I wasnt feeding enough and as soon as I put a little extra in his feed he was much more enthusiastic about life without being silly. Great coat, bright eyes even if he is a little round.
