I have a new horse arriving in the next week or so and he is a little underweight. He's a 17hh warmblood. What feeds are best for weight gain? I was thinking some alfa - a oil and something else?
I have been using Baileys Outshine as a balancer to put some weight on my girl and it is working a treat she looks so much better already and she has only been on it for a couple of weeks. She has a pound a day added to her usual feed of just chaff and nuts.
As it is full of oil it releases the energy slowly and also is non heating. I would recommend giving the Baileys nutrionists a call though as they will be able to explain it all properly!!!
Ad lib hay and good (but not excessive) grass would be the best base. Alfa a oil would be a good choice but a decent vit/min supplement would be a good idea as well.
A horse will gain weight if its diet contains more energy than it needs for day to day living. The list of feeds is endless but at this time of year you can let grass do alot of the hard work. Any hard feed should be fibre and oil based to avoid digestive disturbances and other problems.
I too have a (formerly underweight) warmblood and can second the Outshine and Alfa A Oil for weight gain. I also feed baileys #4 conditioning cubes. Also pink powder is great. It's a pro-biotic and gives their system a good boost + makes sure the gut is functioning super effectively etc, esp good after a big change like moving homes.
I fed the above with as much good haylage as he could eat and also sugarbeet with the hard feed, but have heard that Fibre Beet is great for weight gain too.
Also mine came to me with a back problem due to ill fitting saddle, once this was fixed he was better able to hold his weight. I also got a brilliant McTimoney Physio to look over him recently and she found quite a few old problems still lurking. He's been looking (and going) even better since she put him right! (though the spring grass could also be to blame there)! So I would also recommend a good full back, teeth, saddle, general MOT to check he's fully comfortable. I think discomfort is often the reason horses don't keep condition.
I had an underweight Arab x who I fed 4 times a day: mollichaff, baileys outshine and though I fed No 17 as I prefer mix to cubes. Also added the probiotic.
I swear by Allen and Page "Calm and Condition". You soak it for ten mins as it beet based, looks like porrige but the horses LOVE IT! Great healthy rate of weight gain and gives them glorious coat condition. Feed with Alpha Oil
Another vote for outshine which I've used a lot in the past.
Current horse wont eat it (strange animal) so have been using D&H Buildup with good results.
A&P Calm and Condition soaked in with some sugar beat, mixed with Alfa A Oil and bulk it out with some Hi Fi light and redi grass, add some pink powder, divide into 3 feeds a day, you'll see a difference in a few weeks.
