Feeding hay from the floor with silly horse!

After reading the other post about haynets vs hay from the floor, I really think I ought to be feeding Danny off the floor. For a start, it might stop him from pulling faces at the horses either side of him as he'll have his head down!

Only thing is, he's a messy bugger at the best of times - and also likes to throw buckets around (and at people

Pony has his out of a giant white plastic bucket, we have a few more of these. Just worried that Danny's stupid enough to stand in/on it or something and break it... would a flexible one be better? but it'd also be easier to pick up I'd think... can I put a few clean bricks in it to weigh it down?

tbh, in my experience with a messy horse if you put it in a bucket they just pull it out and spread it all over their bed and make more mess!
 
You could try a big tub trug with a Hayledge in it.

IME if you get the amount of hay right then they do eat it all up and not trash it into their beds. My lad only spreads it in his bed when I've given him too much. If I get it right there are a few wisps left the next morning but no trashing.

Maybe we might just see about something similar... Otherwise I think I can cope with a few stray bits of hay. I agree with you about getting the amount right - then if he chooses to drag it round his stable first, he'll just bloody well have to tidy up after himself!

I have change from haynets recently after reading posts on here. 1 of my ponies alway kicks buckets over and stampes on them so i use a dustbin (it seems to be much tougher) and put it inside a tyre to stop him from kicking it about
 
I use half a blue barrel cut in half and put in the corner of the stable. Seems to work really well and hardly any haylage on the floor. Its quite heavy for a horse to throw around in a temper!!
 
I use a big tub trug thing but to be honest my girl just drag it out the bucket and stand in it while eating it :s lucky my YO doesn't mind as the cattle will sift through the dirty straw for the good stuff.

Another option is a hay bar, makes it a little bit more difficult to drag the hay out but I'm sure they would manage if they wanted too!
 
Mine is another hooligan who also likes to throw items around his box. He did have the corner of the stable blocked off to act as a manger but that has been taken out - YO was fed up with finding (a very large) block of board in his bed each morning.

And all he did was pick it out, spread it over his bed anyway. He is now fed on the floor in the corner. When I finish off I retrieve all his haylage and put it back but each morning, there is not a shred left!
 
I use a large black tub with holes drilled in the bottom, it has rope handles, so I tie it to a ring in the corner of the stable with bailing twine.
 
I bought hay bars to deal with this problem. Pony is very pleased - now she can enjoy pulling all the hay out of the hay bar before she spreads it around the floor!

Blinking ponies...
