My local farmer has suggested I change from feeding hay to haylage. I have 2 horses and we are going through a bale of hay in a week. Once it is opened, how quickly do I have to use up the haylage before it goes bad?
I find this depends on the weather, and the moisture content of the haylage.
For example we find the bales we open at the beginning of autumn will 'heat up' quicker due to the milder temps, so will go off quicker. Whereas if we open one mid winter it will last longer.
Our haylage is very dry, almost like wrapped hay, so a bale is lasting 3 weeks. We take the wrap off and it is stored in a barn, so away from rain or sunlight.
However a wetter haylage may only last 7-10 days.
