current yard we are at has NO grass.. there ISNT an option to move, he only goes out for about 6hrs-8hrs and when he comes in he has ad-lib hay.
he has a bucket of readi-grass when he gets in then in the evening he has speedi beet, alfa-a oil and competition mix then some conditioning cubes in his nut ball, but im paranoid he is loosing condition. also has the same for breakfast.
would feeding equi-jewel help? i know a lot of people reccommend it.
any advice/tips.

Not at all, it's just an expensive supplement. Add a cup of freshly ground Linseed to his feed daily, works far better and at a fraction of the cost. If you want to add condition, corn oil could be added to his diet.

I know someone whose horse has metabolic issue and has gained weight with Equijewel, and I've got some for my poor doers (jury is out). How good is his hay? Can they not get hay in the field as well as overnight - I would be concerned about empty stomachs and ulcers for that period

Equijewel is my go-to product for horses that arrive in poor condition, and it's used a lot for welfare cases for re-feeding. I feed linseed or copra for maintenance, but for real skinnies, Equijewel seems to pack more of a punch. For compromised horses, I feed it in regular small amounts with nothing else added, up to a max 2kg per day in small, regular "powershots" (I usually measure out the total amount in the morning, and give the horse a double handful every time i walk past it). Feeding it this way means that the horse doesn't have to expend any energy digesting fibre at the same time (if it is having sufficient grass/hay, this isn't a problem)

Tnavas, its rarely I disagree with you, but on this subject I will, particularly in view of the welfare cases I have used it on, even in head to head use against other feed products on similar animals.

OP, I've used EJ in the past for a purpose, and its worked. Nothing is a 'wonder food' with quick results, but EquiJewel will, as Auslander says; pack a punch :)
Its not cheap, but give it 3 weeks or so and you ought to start seeing results :)

might try the linseed first then maybe the EJ.
so difficult to know what to try.
option to feed in field isnt really viable, hes in with 4 other horses and owner doesnt like hay in fields. before he goes out he may have some readigrass to help 'fill' him up.

I have both mine on Equijewel.

Love it. Their coats are fantastic and shiny, they are a good weight and a bag of it lasts me a month with the two of them getting a cup of it morning and night. I don't feed it to put weight on, rather to maintain condition.
They were always a good weight before, but could have done with a but more muscle and topline. Since they have been on it, their condition has never been better. Well worth the $$.

Id personally take the competition mix out unless he's in hard work. Maybe BE or BS and training hard.

Sometimes horses struggle to maintain weight with feeds that don't suit them.

My suggestion would be conditioning cubes in feed with low starch and sugar, linseed, you can add a drop of mazola oil if need be, maybe a balancer if you wanted. Then Alfa pellets in ball.
