Hi,I roughed my old hunter off last year,so he has spent all winter in the field, obviously with rugs and field shelter ect.
He is a fairly good dooer, but my plans are to show him this year.I will be bringing him back into work next week and was wondering what sort of grub to give him.Last year he was on blue chip but i carnt help thinking it made him a little fizzy.

Alfalfa has good quality protein to help build muscle and is slow release energy. A balancer like topspec leisuretime is cheaper than blue chip to provide vits and mins. Blue chip is more expensive because you are paying for the marketing. There are loads of balancers though, dodson and horrell do one called ultimate balancer. Some ready cooked linseed or linseed lozenges would give oil for coat shine.

If you start feeding him now, while still in the field you'll be surprised how much difference to his rate of fitness/muscle it will make. Still won't cut out the month at least of walking but it will help.

Have you tried Baileys Top Line cubes, they're very good for weight and shouldn't (all horses are different!

) fizz him up; I got a point to pointer to race fitness on those, it was the only thing that she was sensible on!

my horse does really well on top spec conditioning flakes, alfa a and when in full work an endurance mix .When he is having a bit of a holiday he gets the alfa a ,flakes and the top spec balancer - always as cool as a cucumber and looks fab.

Allen and Paige Calm and Condition works really well on my big hunter gives him the condition but doesn’t fizz him up.
