Started both on Rosehip for thier feet and little lady on Echinacea Root ,Garlic ,Aniseed and Liquorice for her RAO.
Anyone else use herb mixes?

Dont feed garlic! It kills the bacteria in their hind guts and causes a lot of problems.

I feed rosehips as treats for clicker training, nettles, hawthorn, willow - depends on the time of year or what she needs .

Pro earth on ebay has a brill variety .

used to feed mixed herbs, either bought specially or added individually in feed...and have used feeds with herbs pre added...then stumbled upon self medication so now allow them to choose for them selves from a selection of safe oils & herbs...they know what they want/need & tho it takes a little more time once you've figured what each horse is most likely to go for ie for a particular need or condition...its very simple & rather fun-they seem to enjoy the extra individual attention...to me, it now feels odd/wrong to add pre mixed herbs. also that can unbalance them & potentially could cause more harm than good in some situations...

I agree about not feeding garlic, its used to make my old mare very lethargic and appear run down, I have IBS and garlic is something I make a real effort to steer well clear of as it's definitely not good for my digestive system!

I use rose hips for rewards and feed mint every day, i've used herbal calmers and digestive supplements quite successfully too.

I do when necessary, but I always seek help before hand they can actually do more harm than good when mixed incorrectly. Ellen Collinson is fantastic:):)

This is a good book
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Modern-Hors...9816/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1328106429&sr=8-1

But this website has added everything almost word for word
http://www.equinatural.co.uk/

I buy my herbs from here
http://www.cotsherb.co.uk/

I mix different batches depending on the season;

Clivers
Nettle
Mint
Dandelion
Buckwheat
Milk Thistle
Red Clover
Hawthorn
Marigold
Chamomile
Neem
Fenugreek seeds
Turmeric
Comfrey
Eyebright
Yarrow

You can also infuse any of them in Olive Oil or Sweet Almond Oil for six weeks and you have a therapeutic oil (Neem oil - for insect bites etc)

Or you can melt some beeswax into the oil, add some essential oil for smell and you have a balm to use (Comfrey balm good for bumps and knocks).

Thank you, I had been feeding Turmeric but had stopped to try a joint supplement, think I might just go back to Turmeric TBH.
Shall have a look at the website.

Interested to read about garlic , is that fresh garlic, or even in it's powdered form?

I can do a big hands up for cleavers, I had a panic last year when I caught our pony eating them in the field, so I looked it up and apparently it is a good anti inflammatory , he most have known it would do him good, has he had hurt his back, and I have never seen him show interest since :)
