Hi guys - just a quick one. I have been feeding my two Allen and Page weight gain through the winter. Its great stuff. I have also been adding apple chaff to this.

My food bills are £60 per month.

I am proposing to stop the chaff to save a bit of money. Should I do this? I thought it was just to add bulk to their feed but if it has an impact on condition I will keep going.

Thoughts? Is everyone else spending loads on feed?!

I have always been taught like you it is just to "bulk" the feeds. . . . therefore shouldn't be needed?. . . . .

My feed bills for my 2 are similar tbh i feed coarse mix, wheat feed, sugar beet, carrot chaff and carrots. Would cutting out chaff really save that much? I buy carrot chaff its £4 a bag at the moment as its on buy2 get one free

Yeh very expensive!

My 4yr old gets Baileys Lo Cal, Hi Fi & Fibre Nuts (£36 Per Mth)

My 22yr old gets A&P C&C, Mollichaff veteran & Pink Powder. Partial hay replacers Hi Fi Senior, Grass Nuts & Sugar Beet. (£76 Per Mth)

Between them I also spend £28 a month on hay

Total monthly feed bill - £140

Mine is on about 3 bags of Build up mix/ 1 bag alfa/ Naf 5 */ Garlic/Oil/Carrots - Total for the month is about £70!!!

Just for one

I think I ought to find a cheaper way.. left overs from the house maybe!! hee hee!!

Have always thought chaff or chop was an expensive way of buying straw!!

Very little feed value, just stops horses bolting their feed as it takes more chewing.

Would think it better to add bulk if you want to in the form of sugarbeet or nuts.

My big lad gets through a bag of spillers vet cond mix every 10 days or so and he has this with mollichaff and foalie gets spillers mare and youngstock and a bag lasts her about two weeks , again she gets mollichaff. They get carrots, apples etc now and again.

And hay I get through about 5 big bales a week.

So monthly food bill approx £ 192.

I thought chaff was to stop them bolting their food.

I don't bother with feeding chaff myself. My horse gets enough forage without adding more to his hard feed. I used to feed chaff to a previous horse as he used to bolt his food but if your horse doesn't do this I think it's unecessary.

oh my god, i just worked mine out - half bag speedibeet £4 half bag chaff £3 and linseed meal £8 - mine is an amazing good doer!!!!!!!
jesus i am glad i dont have a poor doer!!!

However supplements add up for me - £25 pernamax joint supplement a month plus garlic.

and hay is £17 a month

think i doing not too bad really - she 15.3hh idxtb

My boy has every month

4 bags cond cubes £40
2 bags sugarbeet £12
3 bags barley £18
2 bags alfa oil £24

1 tub biotin £10
tub pink powder £14 (only been on it 3 weeks was on benevit before that)

This adds up to... omg I think its £119 just for hard food!!

My youngster has a bag of top spec lite and a bag of safe and sound a month which is nothing compared to the above!

Roll on summer...
