Hi,
Do any of you add oil to your horses feed? A vet (who helped our boy over his colic) recommended adding oil (especially in the winter) instead of upping his grains etc. to keep on weight and condition, when quality of grass & turnout in winter is lacking.
Is feeding oil good? Would you feed it to your own horses? I feel there are some mixed opinions over it. So why would or wouldn’t you feed it?
Thanks

I have fed oil in some form to my horses for years, it has many benefits and I cannot think of any real negatives, I tend to use micronised linseed now as it is readily available, you can feed a fair quantity without having to give much with it, unlike liquid oil which many are not keen on if the feed is overloaded, it can help with condition, it is good for their feet, skin and coat, it is good for joints and should be good for their stomachs as well unlike many types of feed available.

Interesting article, but he doesn't give Rape seed oil on the chart. I used that oil because somewhere I read that it had the best balance of omega 3 and 6. My 17hh mare came to me in poor condition, she was given a full scoop of conditioning nuts twice daily and at night a cup of rape seed oil. She now looks fantastic and I've dropped the oil, reduced the nuts.

I feed alpha gold which has tumeric, linseed oil and coconut oil in it. Horses' coats are shiny and soft and my usually stiff slightly grumpy horse is nice and relaxed (instructor has also commented how well he is going now).

I had heard the same about linseed - it would be my oil of choice as it is so easy to feed.

In the article he does mention rapeseed as being one of the sources that causes the diet to be too high in Omega 6
