Our 16 y/o mare was diagnosed with Cushings about a year ago, and due to spates of on/off lami and remedial shoeing (she's had to have a lot cut back), her feet aren't in great condition.
We've started to use hoof moisturiser - working great - but a lecturer (I'm 3rd year Biovet Science) recommended in a lecture on laminitis that methionine supplement contains the sulphur containing amino acid that help rebuild the bonds between the damaged laminae.
We got a bag in just to try for her and started with about half a scoop per day mixed in with her feed (Happy Hoof).
Now someone has told us that its dangerous to feed!? Nobody from the supplier to the shop told us how to feed or any risks. We've stopped feeding it, I'm just trying to do some further research on it.
Can anyone put us straight on this??

maybe a safer option would be MSM (methyl sulphonyl methane) is a high quality, bio-available form of organic Sulphur, which is an essential component of connective tissue, cartilage, skin, and hooves. Sulphur is believed to have many benefits to the body as it has the ability to pass through cellular tissue with ease. i think theres been research done on Methionine Supplement and it damages the liver in large amounts (dunno what a safe dose would be for a horse):)

Thank you so much.
I've been looking on sciencedirect and pubmed and I haven't yet found any papers on it - then again, I have had a very busy day so will look more tomorrow. I've also contacted the suppliers, supplement companies and feed companies to see what they have to say.
I can't understand why they would sell it if it was so harmful!!!!!

i used to feed D L methionine many years ago .. hard to get now. half a teaspoon a day for a 14 hh was what i used to give.
nowadays there are many good feet supplements which are balanced in their available nutrients .. you would probably be best with one of thiose. cornecrescine (the original one) will increase growth if rubbed into coronet every day (and you get nice long finger nails too!!) i would think the main thing in your case is to get the cushions under control and the ACTH levels as near normal as possible, then the feet should start to improve (as you should be able to keep lami free). Wishing your pony well, these cushionoid ones can be tricky to get right and comfortable.

Thank you so much for your help :)
She's been on 1 Prascend a day for 12 months now and to be honest, we're going to have to get back on her soon as she is becoming so fiery in-hand and more than anything, she's SOUND (yay!!!!!!), so I think she's doing fairly well - she certainly seems back to her normal self.
The vet said something along the lines of because her hooves aren't growing at the same rate, the farrier had to cut her toe right back, and her feet were then incredibly short and started to crumble - the moisturiser has helped with that but I was just wondering about the long term damage that repeated laminitis has had on her hooves and the laminae and after hearing this in a lecture, wondered if it would help.
I will certainly look through what you have said tomorrow, thanks so much :)
