I have a 7 month old gelding, please can anyone give me a little bit of advice with regards to his feeding, he currently has as much haylage as he can eat, and a small amount of stud mix for tea, he is rather large so we do not want him to put on excess weight as this will put pressure on his joints, but would like a little bit mor condition, any advixe would be appreciated

We weaned the young lad yesterday. He will be fed approx half scoop of stud mix twice a day. He's in fantastic condition, but will loose some condition now that he's not got mums milk - plus the general stress of weaning. He is out 24/7 at the moment on excellent grazing.

If he does have to come in due to bad weather he like yours will have as much haylage as he wants.

Think you have to play it by ear. Look at their condition generally and adjust accordingly.

You do need to take account of the fact that if you don't feed the mix/nuts etc. at the FULL recommended rate they will not get their full ration of vits and mins. Speak to the feed company, you'd be surprised just how much a day a weaner wants to maintain correct growth, so topping up with a reduced amount of a suitable supplement that won't put weight on such as Surelimb from D and H is a good idea.

All of our youngsters get surelimb by D & H, they are out 24-7 at the mo, with two small feeds a day of stud mix-chop & beet. When the weather worsens they will have ad lib hay also

He is not completely on his own, he is on a yard with other horses and lives next door to my other horse, we just have limited grazing, he always has another horse in a neighbouring field, and doesnt seem to bother being on his own, we just cant find a suitable companion yet.

My youngster has had (since he was weaned) Alfa A and initally Surelimb but then Equimins Pro Bio. I tried him on stud mix and it just made him fat and also (as someone else said) as I was giving him such a small amount, it made me worry that he wasn't getting all the vits and mins he required. I'd got for a good all purpose supplement which pays attention to the baby horse's needs and some thing like alfa a...

Whilst my chap was a lot older at 15 months when I got him, I fed him alfa A lite, speedi-beet, high fibre cubes and ad lib hay. He also had equimins young stock supplement which ensured that he got all the things he needed to grow.

He did very well on this diet over winter and came out of it in excellent condition according to my vet who saw him in March.

Now changing him to Simple Systems as I really like the way they feed.

I have a 4 year old -
I was not too sure what to feed him apart from regular vits, mins and feed.
I went onto the Baileys horse feed website and found the customer services brilliant.
Not only did they give me a day to day plan of what I should feed they recommended certain diets for certain cases.
Their website is www.baileyshorsefeeds.co.uk

might help you out.

All my youngsters get fed Simple Systems feeds - Luciebix, Red bag grass nuts and unmollassed beet along with Allen and Page Stud and youngstock cubes.

The SS feeds are great especially if you have limited turnout as all the feeds are soaked so you are feeding quite large quantities without overloading them or punping them full of too many cereals which can cause them to grow too fast and incorrectly - plus it keeps them occupied for hours
