I feed chaff, but my freinds horse is fed just straight mix. I do remeber one occasion where he choked..possibly from eating too fast but i am not sure.
But i think there are some people who feed just straight nuts/mix. I guess it just depends on what the horse likes/is good for the horse.

I worked for years at a RS that just fed straights. I think that its less in fashion now because of the understanding of the importance of fibre in diets but I don't think that its absolutely essential. Depends on the circumstances.

In the 10 years I was there they never had a colic or any horses with digestive problems so it clearly didn't cause them any harm

Yeah, I used to always feed chaff - but right now Ive gone totally onto one specific make of feed so dont anymore. Well I do feed a chaff to one of my horses as thats all she gets but my others dont get any!

I asked this a while ago, cuz my horse is so slow to eat!! I replaced his afla chff with alfa cubes but he has now decided that he will only eat his food if theres hardly any alfa cubes in there! GRR am only feeding them to balance out feeding the straight oats.

I've often said on here that I can't see the point of adding a chaff/fibre type food if a horse has adlib hay/haylage. Someone quite rightly pointed out that it stops some horses bolting their food but otherwise there seems no point to me.

I do admit though that I do add a herbal chaff to the feed of one of them because she gets so little and I feel mean too!
