HI
Just a quick question- feeding new horse for the last month
the following 3 feeds 9lb rolled oats, 3 lb dengie alfa high oil, top spec balancer, garlic, also iron xcell ( with iron b vits ect) and a copper booster that nealy finished now just to build him up and some salt added! and has free access to excellent hayledge. not fat just a good covering of ribs.he was just really run down and fed on nothing really and has been really weak when riding.has very little top line and obviously not worked correctly at all. now hes starting to look better and starting to throw a buck! it just shows really how run down he was cos its taken nearly 4 weeks to get him like that. does anyone else think this is too much oats or anything else i could feed him or not feed him? hes a sf but for a blood horse hes very calm and well mannered and the oats dont seem to blow his mind. does anyone else feed oats and have positive results?am i getting the protein, fibre ratios ok? im looking to do lots of jumping and flat work 5/6days a week-hopefully!

I would ring one of the feed companies for best advice really. I thought oats fed alone were not balanced, as they affect calcium levels, so I would personally prefer a mix as it contains all the required nutrients, although the balancer and alfa will help.

Also if he has perked up after a month and has just thrown the odd high spirits buck, then imagine what he might be like after another month on 9lb of oats a day! Ad lib haylage is a great idea for helping to gain weight, as he will eat what he wants. Good luck with him!

I may have read it wrong but seems to be worded as 9lbs of oats etc per feed?do you mean 9lb spread over 3 feeds??am sure you do but just want to be sure

I have a tb and you can oat him up and he is the same laid back chap with as he is without

Yes will ring a feed company tomorrow and get some advice, great idea thanks. I know 9lbs a day sounds a lot but its all relative to work and how he handles it etc so will see what they say i guess! thanks x cat

you could maybe switch to a conditioning mix, cube now he has perked up a little

sounds like you are balancing his feeds well by adding the balancer, but you really dont want to be adding the extra supps unless he absolutely needs it

,bloods are usually the way to go if you are unsure if he is slightly aneamic etc, however the way he is picking up it sounds unlikely!
Just be careful with the feed companies, they can offer some very good advice, but it can work out costly aswell,lol...they are at the end of the day there to sell their own products
