Feeding oil

Why do you want to do this ? there are loads of companies out there who sell food specially formulated to have all the vitamins and minerals that a laminitic pony needs. Once you start messing around with glugs of oil, you risk upsetting their already delicate metabolism.

The dietary triggers for laminitis are soluble carbohydrates - that is sugars and starches. There are no starches or sugars in pure vegetable oils, but some oil-rich supplements do contain starch as they have a wheat-base.

The stereotypical laminitic is a greedy, good-doer who shouldn't need the extra calories that oil provides, but some laminitics, particularly if they suffer from Cushings, do not conform to the stereotype and can be difficult to keep weight on. If keeping weight on via fibre sources alone is proving a problem, then the additional of oil to the diet in some form is a better solution than feeding starchy cereals. However, it would be best to discuss your horse's individual case with your vet before changing his diet.

linseed oil is particularly good as its an anti oxidant and anti inflamatory.
i have a leaflet somewhere that says in some recent study or other, it was found to be a safe way to put weight on lamanitics provided the dosage was correctly adhered to ( 3 tablespoons for our 12hh welsh).
