Many thanks, understand what you are saying but the feed companies will just sell there own product - therefore does not help me which company to go for, I have had great succsess with D & H, Baileys and topspec with diffent horses - but didnt know if anyone had anygood feedback on the lower calorie diets.

She is a senior nutrition, I thought that but ATEOTD she knows what goes in it. Therefore she works hand in glove with the leading liver disease professor.

I have bought feeds for years many different brand.

It depends wether you want or care for

A. a tailored diet so its exactly what your horse needs right down to the last grain.

B. mixture of feeds where you can never get a tailored diet as each manufacturer does not know what goes in other feeds and you wont know if the feeds are all what your horse needs.

I speak from experience always bought a bit of that a bit of this. No diet really came up to scratch.

Teresa Hollands Checks your weight of the horse age breed work etc then says what it needs. She helped my mare with her liver diet, now my gelding with his.

Do you actually want to go to one company only???

Then why don't you ring each one and see who asks and gives the best advice. I did 3 companies and D&H gave the best and accurate advice. UTU

For me a tailored diet for my horses needs one you can tweak or so as things go along.

Is better than a mix or this and that and no company can tell you if its right or not as they not sure of all the ingredients.

One last thing if you do phone other companies and speak to their feed expert see if they actually have Teressa qualification. Diet is so important for a horse.

Dodson & Horrell's Senior Nutrition Manager Dr Teresa Hollands BSc(Hons) MSc (Nutrition) PhD R.Nutr will be the official guest speaker at the event, offering her expertise and insight into feeding related matters.

many thanks for this, I hope I didnt come assross rude, Im just fed up with companies trying to push there own brands and slagging others of. I will definately give her a call then.

let me know how you get on.

This is exactly how i felt.

I spoke to so many comapnies about my mares liver

they said

global herbs restore
gloabal herbs immune
global herbs alpha bute

£ 100 +

nothing did anything so had to stop or the product had an averse effect on my mare

next

trinity consultants

L($
setback salts
Vit e oil.

again £ 100 +

the L($ made my mare really ill as its ok for detox but not damaged liver

next hilton herbs said another detox i said wooooooooooaHHHH no more detox

then
baileys again more detox stuff and immune stuff

then allen and page give fast fiber

Then D&H

DON'T GIVE ANY OF THE ABOVE DEFINITELY NO FAST FIBER ANY STRAW RELATED FEED

what you need is

milk thistle
yea sacc
25g alfa a
25 G nuts
and sugar beet 700grms in each of her many feeds.

This diet i saw the difference within a few days.

the only things now is to gradually rid of all the other 11 things i had to buy which was a waste of money so the others are using them. I am £ 300 out of pocket of wasted feeds and supplements.

please let me know how you get on again :)

My 20 year old is on a small scoop of hifi molasses free, speedibeet, lexvet cool mix (a mineral supplement) and yeasacc. He has never been so shiny and well, and this is only after 6 weeks on the lexvet. It is also pretty cheap compared to other ones. If your horse will eat a molasses free feed, that will keep weight off - mine has been so much slimmer on a totally sugar free diet.

Levithan is right each individual horse has its own dietary needs.

I have a 25 yo mare, good doer who lives out with access to hay. Over the years tried this and that. I now use Primero to get her bute into her. She keeps weight on fine.

I think its a minefield where supplement's are concerned.

My mare is 13 and a very good doer. I have to weigh & soak all her nets and she's muzzled all year but is stabled at night. I changed her feed a couple of years ago and she has the most shiniest coat ever, even now when clipped you'd think I'd polished her:) I feed1 x scoop do Happy Hoof on a morning and on a night she has 2 x cups of fast fibre with maybe a handful of HH and some mag ox.

I feed my 20 yo good doer Fast Fibre :-)), Healthy Hooves (also very good for shiny coat as well as hooves!) and a sprinkling of Horse and pony nuts. Only supp is a general vit and min one for our areas mineral type deficiencies and some pink powder. Plus good hay and carrots and pears and apples. He has a yellow Rockies salt/mineral lick in the stable and the field.

Cheap and works for him.

Agree each horse is individual, but for the majority of good doer's whether they are 10 or 20 only need a good fibre based diet.

My 22 year old has a handfull of FF with Linseed, Magnesium, Low Cal and a handfull of Fibergy he's out on good grazing. But he has no medical issues at all, his coat is very very shiney :)
