Could I have some suggestions for what to feed an oldie please?
I am taking on two 30 year olds. I have been looking after them all summer for a friend. Both have managed well with just grazing and a mineral lick but the one with very few teeth began to slightly drop off a few weeks back and so I have been feeding both a fast fibre feed with added minerals and salt and linseed.
I will be taking them on properly in a week or so and want to know what is the best way to make sure the one with less teeth has enough fibre...he can't manage hay or long grass .
Do I carry on with fast fibre, bump it up with chaff or is there a good alternative? Beet? All of the above ? He'll have micronised linseed, pro balance plus and salt regardless (is that ok). Anything I should avoid?

Also worming...I suspect they are well overdue a worming. I'm thinking Panacur Equine Guard?

Things like soaked grass nuts , fibre nuts , Lucie nuts from Simple systems , speedy Beet. All very good for oldies and it is easy to add the Micronised Linseed and other things.

Regarding the worming I would speak to your vet as to which one is best for oldies that have not been wormed recently.

Check with your vet if they do a oldies health check. My local Equine Hospital do one from November to March. For a fixed price you get a full health check including bloods.

Are they both up to date with their vaccinations , especially for Tetanus and teeth need to be seen to.

I have a 24 year old who is still working. With good management there is no reson that they can not live a long life.

Another thing that you could consider is at their age is Cushings. Again ther is often a few blood test for this ( you pay for the vet to take the blood but not the lab fees.

Thanks paulineh

They will be getting a health check :)

Both show no obvious signs at all of Cushing's or any health problems luckily (apart from a cataract) but obviously I will be keeping a close eye on them both.
