i was wondering on my long drive home how many people give a treat to other horses on the yard when giving to their own?

i only give to the horses i know are allowed a treat and also it depends on what the treat is. i ask each owner if their horses/ponies are allowed a treat whether is it a polo, grass nut/apple/pear/carrot etc.

so who does give to others and did you ask the owner before hand (for future as well as there and then)??

I feed Libbys stable neighbour the odd carrot or apple, but only becos his owner said that was ok! And I know they offer libby the odd treat. I did find out the other day that someone was feeding her in the mornings which I wasn't overly impressed about. I like people to ask first....

I often feel mean when giving my horse a carrot and the other horse watching, so I usually give the horse watching a carrot too.

However I know all the horses on my yard and are all grand to have a carrot :)

First one to reply!! :oi The only time my horse gets a treat is when I do his stretching exercises between his front legs etc for his back and when I come back from a ride. I always make sure that they are given in the stable so no other horses see or when I either catch him up or turn him out but I always make sure the other horses don't see otherwise it is a tad unfair to the others.

i felt mean tonight giving to mine and a couple of others as there was another one with her head over the door looking at me all gooey eyed, i apologised to her and will have to ask the owner tomorrow if it's ok. i know my horses neighbour is fine to eat anything and everything and he gets a bit narked if i don't give him! 2 others in the block are fine as well but the others i either haven't asked the owner or i don't have the right treats (they like 'special' treats!) lol.

i never encourage feeding treats or titbits by hand. if owners do it they need to do it discreetly inside stable. i hate nippy/bargy/iwant treats type horses. and i think owners should never titbit other peoples horses. mine are happy with a carrot thrown on the floor.

Have always had a rule about no titbits on the yard, mainly because I had a lot of youngsters & show liveries in as well as 2 or 3 local liveries. I still keep to that rule even now.
If someone was too lazy to go into their stable to give theirs a tit-bit, then that was their problem.

I still pishes me off even now when well-meaning people think its 'ok' to give mine a treat, despite me asking them not to - as one fuzzy is doing well with training to not keep being a nuisance over them & it only takes one idiot to set the fuzzy right back to square one again.

One neighbour thinks its 'sweet' to pop a treat over the fence to mine most days! (and she is horsey too!) Mind you, the electric fence got her a treat last weekend when she tried to do her 'usual' :D

I generally don't treat the other horses on the yard as I'd probably go through a bag of carrots a day but dont give tit bits too much anyways!

What I do feel guilty about though is that in our block of four horses (two of which are mine and one belongs to a friend) the first person up in the morning gives the horses their breakfast but the new lady won't leave anything for hers so he's looking and me all gooey eyed and standing so patiently but I can't give him anything :(
