Currently feeding Winergy Medium without getting the amount of oomph I need. Wondering about changing and using oats for the oomph bit. My query is what should I feed with them? Using Mollichaf in winter as bulk. Also, are oats expensive, what's a minimum quantity one can buy (suspect they go off quite quickly)? Will introduce slowly, wonder how long a sack/bag will last at minimal use levels. Do you adjust quantity on a day by day basis, ie what is the lead time before they kick in?

Sorry rather vague but have no experience of oats as you can probably guess!

Thanks.

I introduced my horse to oats for "oomph" as he is very laid back. I actually feed Dengie Naked Oats which are meant to be like rocket fuel. Dengie said to feed a handful, more if needed. They also said that they could be fed just around competitions etc., just adding a handful when required. I think they said to start a day before. I feed 1/2 scoop of naked oats and 1 of alfa-a oil, twice a day, and its brilliant stuff. I go through a bag every week or two but I know others at the yard who only feed tiny amounts of regular oats and their bag can last ages. Cost? Well the naked oats are fairly concentrated and cost me £14.65 a bag. It has all the other info on the Dengie site. I also feed the Dengie Performance Vits and Mins. I sound like a Dengie advert now...!!! I don't work for them, honest!!

A 30kg bag of regular oats lasts me about 3 weeks feeding two twice a day. I mix with soaked sugar beet bulp to make them think they are getting more grub than they are. Whole oats don't go off for months and months as long as you keep them dry, they're not like processed feed. Cost wise I pay about £6 for the sack but I don't know what it is in UK.

I used to feed tiger oats it is about £11 a bag and lasted me 2 weeks, made a fab difference and you could feed it along side anything or nothing

I used to feed my old New Forest 1/2 scoop rolled oats twice a day. A 20kg bad lasted about 3 weeks. He had added vits and mins, too and some carrots for succulence. Can't remember what I used to pay but it wasn't a lot. We used to buy it from a farmer shop though rather than a horsey shop. oats last for quite some time as long as kept dry and rodent free. We used to keep it in a thick wooden box to avoid mice and condensation... Hope this helps.

A 20 kg bag lasted me all winter. I think it cost me about £4 a bag.

Oats start to loose their freshness quite quickly, especially rolled or bruised oats, but I feed mine all winter. Keep them in a dry cool place and they will be fine.

I like oats, they are underestimated as a feed. They are higher in fibre than other hard feeds. They are high in phospherous and if fed in high levels, feed a supplement or chaff with added calcium to balance this out.

I have always found that it takes about 2 weeks before I noticed any difference in my horse.

As with any feed, introduce gradually and increase the amount gradually. You will get to know the amount needed for extra ommph but without causing a silly horse. If it is any help, my horse had 2 small square scoops fed a day split between 2 feeds. He was engeretic, but not hyper.
