13.1hh, 8yr old gelding who will be out 24/7 unruggged or only in a lightweight. Will have plenty of hay when needed.

Do you think he'll need vit/min supplement. Was planning on giving him a token feed once a day as he has slight joint problems I was going to put him on a joint supplement (prob herbal one)

I would supplement with minerals (copper, zinc, magnesium and selenium plus salt) and maybe try turmeric for his joints, lots of info on it if you have a google and a look on facebook. Its cheap, so if it doesn't work for him, you've not spent much. Its working well for my cob though, quite remarkable really.

Get it from my local asian supermarket, its £2.99 a kilo and I feed about 2 flat tablespoons a day, but my horse is a 15hh heavy cob, yours would need less than that I would imagine. You have to give a little freshly ground black pepper too, to increase absorption, and a source of oil. I use ground linseed for the oil but you can feed a few teaspoons of oil if you don't want to give linseed. :)

You can buy the Turmeric from any supermarket. You will need to feed it with some oil (Only use Coconut, Olive or Linseed) and Black Pepper (this needs to be freshly ground so you will need a pepper mill).

I would start off with a teaspoonful of turmeric twice a day with 6-8 twists of Black Pepper and about 20 mils of oil in each feed. Increase the Turmeric until you see an improvement. My mare is on 2 table spoonful twice a day 10 twists of Pepper and I use micronized Linseed in her feed anyway. I will drop the Micronized Linseed during the summer and will replace it with Extra Virgin Olive oil.

By starting slowly the horse gets use to eating it and also you can see how much you need.
