If your using oats for a little extra omph but don't want to put much weight on or blow their mind what feeding rate would you suggest? Grams per 100 kilograms of horse

I don't feed grammes per 100 kilo grammes .
If I am feeding oats for omph I start at half a kilo per day and see what happens I am happy feeding up to three kilos a day to a horse in hard work .

I think that will depend on the horse. I have four on 250 grams per day (that is what I think of as maintenance), but they are all quite different. eg, one is old, one is young, one is little but in work, the other is big but not in work.

However, 250 grams is my start point and I would up from there if I felt I needed more for any reason.

Up to a kilo a day here. I feed 1:1 with lupins mostly so a horse getting a kilo of oats would also be getting a kilo of lupins.

Lupins as in the seed from the lupin plant? I feed my lot hemp as well which is a great feed, but it's always good hearing what is available in other countries.

Yep, lupins as in the legume. Sweet lupins. High in protein, moderate starch levels and what there is is complex carbs so non heating. Typically 13 MJ/kg DE so similar to oats but non heating. protein levels about 34% so higher thanoats.
Anyone here who needs more calories than a kilo of oats and a kilo of lupins provides (which is only one out of 7 - fatty Arabs!) gets oil. I don't like giving more than a kilo of grains at any one feed as above that there is the potential for the capacity of the stomach to be exceeded and grains to get swept into the small intestine, with all that that implies for hindgut acidosis.

Thanks everyone, it's the first time I'm using them and there wasn't anything on the back and I didn't want to blow her head off (or me get thrown off). I'll start with about 250 and see what happens.

From reading it's pretty fast release energy so I'm guessing I'll see results quite quickly?
