Feeding seaweed - cautionary note from Spillers

About time too! There has been too much indescriminate use of seaweed for horses. It's high in iodine and iron and most horses don't need more iodine and very few horses need any more iron, and both cause problems in excess.

I used to feed seaweed to my horse, lost tons of weight and her coat went dull. After some help of HHO on her weight, I realized the seaweed had really messed her up. Took her off it and hallelujah, she started to perk up and her weights coming on better.

Im jsut about to start my horse a seaweed supplement called seahorse atlantic so I googled peoples views on seaweed ( as its not exactly commonly fed) and came across this so hope Im not wrong dragging up this thread but it seems the problem people have had with seaweed is the iodine levels.
High iodine levels are well known to be very bad for horses however the one im about to feed has been especially formulated to have low levels of iodine so safe for equines.

So just like anything when it comes to feeding horses, aslong as you do your research and get the correct brand then everything should be fine.
