Does anyone have any ideas for fattening up a skinny 19yr old tb?

He's on speedibeet, chaff and veg oil with veteran supp at the mo, on the advice of a nutritionist. Cutting out the cereals has done wonders for his temperament but he is not gaining enough weight.

How can I get some weight on without making him a mental? (He's out 24/7)

My 16yro TB is intollerant to Barley so I feed him on Baileys No.4 Conditioning Cubes which work a treat. He is calm and happy as opposed to the complete phsyco when he was on a mix with barley in it!
Allen and Page do Calm and Condition which is also barley-free and very good.

If he is totally cereal intollerant then you could use alfalfa chaff rather than straw based chaff as it is higher in nutrients.

If you want to stick to non-cereal feeds then you could try adding an alfafa or dried grass product - eg Dengie Alfa A, Readigrass etc. What is his grazing like? Is there anyway he can come in for a couple of hours to have some hay or haylage or can you feed hay/haylage in the field?

try putting in some lin seed oil into your tb feed (i use this in winter), I have a tb and feed her speedy beet with calm and con cubes Allen & page (great for top line and to keep her fizzyness at bay) and chaff Alfer A, you could try Alfer A oil chaff also i use hacking cubes as in light to med work from Alan & page, my mare looks lovely not skinny or fat. I also tryed baileys no 4, but prefer the hacking pencils. try looking at the Allen & page web site

I have used D&H build up and Baileys No 4 with good results - curretly using A&P Calm and Condition and Ride and Relax on my 2 exracers and they are doing well - in winter I add ready cooked Linseed to their feeds to help keep weight on.

I feed my 16 yo TB D&H 16 plus cubes, barley rings and garlic, linseed and parsley oil. He was in poor condition 6 weeks ago and is now lovely and round and I've not noticed any extra fizz.

My TB is the same he's 22yo, he's fed SS feeds but looses weight fast if im not careful. I find Simple systems Instant linseed & TopSpec CoolCondition Cubes fabulous for weight & condition gain without the horse losing the plot!!

I also use Topspec super conditioning flakes if serious weight gain is needed, but its very rare i need them.

My boy is also a nutter when fed cereal feeds the rest of his feed compises of the above plus SS Lucibix & Baileys Local balancer. On this diet he's sane enough to do nice dressage tests without turning in to a kangaroo!!

I have a TBx WB who is fit and it is a nightmare keeping weight on her. I swear by Allen and Page Calm and Condition- she can be quite fizzy and it has jusrt been a god send to keep weight on her. Also its non heating- cereal free so keeps her calm which is great! I feed it with speedibeet

[/ QUOTE ] Actually C&C is not totally cereal-free, although it doesn't contain barley or oats it does contain maize! So while it is great for many horses, if someone is really intent on avoiding cereals it is not the ideal feed!
