Horse is currently on hifi lite & baileys lo cal balancer, but need something to give him that extra oopmh, and sparkle. OH's farm make oats, so was thinking of just feeding these, but is there anything I need to take into account for feeding oats before hand? Obviously I realise some horses explode on it, etc etc. Am I ok to feed these oats straight?

Also, how much would you feed a 16.1hh ISH who lives on fresh air a bit but is alright weight at the moment, in medium work, jumps 3 times a week, sj and xc, hacked out probably twice a week, properly schooled once a week, and then just 'schooled' twice a week (he has loan people as I'm not in the county half the time - uni). Just really lacks that extra umph when doing flatwork/dressage mainly.

I don't feel qualified to offer advice on how much to feed but just wanted to say that not all horses pick up on oats - I fed my cob quite a lot of them during the winter with no noticable change in temprement

Dengie actually recommend that you add a handful of aots (ie. their Naked Oats) to adsparkle without fizz, when a horse needs that bit extra 'oomph'. They can literally be fed by the handful, added gradually (i.e. a small handful in one feed, building up to one or two as necessary).

:-)

I feed baron soaked oats in winter. TBH I dont really notice much difference in his 'pearkiness' but I think most horses do heat up on them. I think oats are one of the best energy giving grains.

If the grain is whole the horse will find the outer husk of the oat almost impossible to digest. This is why people usually feed rolled, crushed, clipped etc.

But soaking the oats allows the outer husk to be digested easily.

I would start with a small amount and build it up until you are happy with the improvement. In the winter Baron got 2 scoops per day, added to this was alfa oil and speedibeet with an all round supplement. He is a 16.3 ISH.

Thanks all. How long should they be soaked for? Hope it does give him the extra umph, had him on energy mix which didn't do much, so running out of ideas.

when H was at ruding school he used to get 1/2 scoop of 'Tiger Oats' morning and night, just gave him a little more energy which was all I needed from him.

They where really good - would highly recommend - gave him 'normal' oats once and he got colic !

do bear in mind that oats do not have a desirable calcium to phosphorus ratio for horses so the diet needs to be calculated to balance this

alfalfa is good for balancing out as it has a high calcuim/phosphorus ratio

I feed straight oats to my welsh cob x and didnt have any effect whatsoever and have tried most feeds that i supposed to give sparkle but havent yet found anything that really works. But that just may be my horse.
