Hi there,

Does anyone feed straights? I am wondering if feeding straights would be cheaper than my usual feed, as the prices have rocketed lately and as I have 3 to feed was wondering who else does it?

I was planning on switching to sugar beet and barley with a Vit and Min supplement.

What are your views please

The reason compound feeds have increased in price...is because the ingredients...that is, the straights...have increased too.
It's more bother than it's worth..and straight feeds go off more quickly.

I feed straight rolled oats, barley rings-only cos you can soak them in hot water perfect in cold weather!
Bag costs under £5 and will last me a month-hence why i feed oasts! Supplement is needed though. any of the allround ones are ok!

With Baileys at over £9 a bag where I am, I have changed to a local feed merchant selling their own brand at £5.50 a bag. Absolutely no difference in performance and very palitable! Wish I'd thought of it earlier!

I feed Alfa Beet with oil and micronised barley. Alfafa is high in calcium which helps to balance the deficiency in the barley. If I was feeding by the textbook I would add a vit/min supplement, but I'm very naughty and I don't!

I have found my old horse keeps her condition on much better with this combination, in the past I had tried various conditioning feeds and veteran mixes which weren't as effective and were much more expensive.
