We still have one of my daughter's first ponies and he is now in his mid twenties.

He has suffered with laimintis in the past, although he has not had an attack for several years now.

He seems perfectly well in himself but now seems to have trouble maintaining his weight.

Does anybody else have old horses or ponies and if so, what do you feed them?

Allan & Page Fast fibre and a Mollichaff Veteran - although as it has been laminitic in the past I would stick to something like TopSpec TopChop which is an unmolassed chaff - use as a hay replacer if sturggling with hay. It is really improtant that they have plebty of fibre going throught heir gut at all times - the Fast Fibre also has sugar beet and linseed in it which will help with condtion and the TopSpec is coated with soya oil so gives more calories as well. If he still needs a bit more help look at either Coolstance or Equijewel - both are fibre based and energy dense so only small amounts need to be added to the feed - would still be getting Fast Fibre and chaff for bulk - to provode extra calories for weight gain.

All of the above are turned into soft mashes with water so are easy for older horses/ponies no matter what their teeth are like - everything here has licked their bowls clean.

Another huge vote for fast fibre it really is a brilliant product, also give dengie a call as most of their products can be used as complete hay replacers and with a view to the previous laminitis they will be able to advise you which one will suit your pony best xx

Our pony is 37 now and loves her feed regime, gobbles everything xxx

my old lad is looking fantastic on AP veteran vitality, he possible eats 1 to 2 sections of haylage at night as he is fussy so he gets a huge tubtrug with 2 scoops (dryweight) and a haybar full of haylage for him to pick at. he has a lovely weight and nice and shiny.

laminitus keep away from mixes etc, micronised linseed meal (charnwood mill) hifi light, and add pink powders...............................works very well
