I'm struggling. Horse PPID on pergoquin, potential laminitic who is also EMS, ridden daily. Sound wandering BF over the stony yard that he wanders around a lot. Age 20 c 500kg

pretty perfectly controlled on a virtually no grass, (track arrangement) low sugar hay, odd amounts of Timothy haylage, small amount of sugar beet to get his equimins, salt and vit E in. Also gets dengie meadowlight with herbs. He has lost weight on this and is now acceptable OK.

PPID 's need protein and his diet is probably pretty low in it plus it is clear he is getting muscle loss. I supplement with micro linseed and also pea protein he gets the 100g suggested by FB

today he wasn't sound on the stoney yard. Yesterday in my effects to increase protein I gave AlfaA with oil. He has had around 1.5 scoop which is around 800g.

I had this with a previous EMS|PPID several years ago and had the same result with dried alfalfa. Have now looked up the explanation of why and it seems to increase insulin in the EMS/lami prone horse.

also suggestions that high protein may well do so. Some questions about balancers with high protein levels.
But PPID needs protein and he does. The pea protein doesn't seem sufficient.

so any ideas and suggestions please.

Would something like sainfoin pellets work for extra protein? I know the legume type feeds are higher in protein than the grass types, but don't know if it would cause the same reaction as the alfalfa has, I think it has higher protein so you could feed less of it? Not entirely sure on this, so someone please correct me if I'm wrong, just know it's good stuff for the sheep and cattle due to protein content

Sainfoine, (bales, not chop/chaff preferably if you can find it.) faba bean is good as well (extruded pellet or flaked, it ought to be possible to purchase it as straights?)

Rats, I was going to suggest both pea protein and micronised linseed which I feed to both of my PPID ladies, but he’s already on them.

The pea protein is brilliant stuff. Not sure if it’s safe to up the levels or not.
yes, Rats :D:D:D:D

how much micro are you feeding? I'm on 200g per day. Wondering about upping it.

unless anyone has better ideas I may have to email FP and see if there is max for pea protein.

My quantities are by volume, not weight 🙃.

600ml micronised linseed plus 100ml pea protein per horse per day, divided between two token feeds based on soaked Dengie meadow cobs + supplements.

Horses are 19yo and 24yo.
I do volume for supplements as well. 330ml micronised linseed for the girls and 600ml for thoroughbred

I have been looking at additional protein sources for my EMS mare. One suggestion is copra e.g. Coolstance Copra. I’ve never fed this but seen it suggested on some sites as suitable for insulin resistant horses.

I recently introduced pea protein but it seemed to wind up my 20 year old KWPN. Since I stopped feeding it, he's back to his normal self. Anyone else have this issue?

just to update I solved the problem by introducing spillers lite and lean balancer. It was a suggestion I got from Clare McD's FB. He has been on it for about 4/5 months and is looking OK. It took a while to switch over but it has worked out well.
