Hello

I recently got an email from Baileys Horse Feeds after I have requested advice on their website. Amongst other things they said to increase her scoops of topline mix from 2kg to 3.1kg per day, which is fine, but they also mentioned maybe splitting her meals into three a day because horses will utilise all the vitamins and minerals more effectively this way (makes sense, they are grazing animals!)

Anyway I am at work all day, I do work about 4 miles from the yard but I only get 30 minutes for lunch. I do live a hundred or so yards away down a dark lane with no lights so maybe could do a late night feed, but not sure, it's a bit dodgy!

Who feeds three times a day and how do you work it into your routine?

I have fed three times a day on occasion - when horse was on box rest to break the day up and during the winter when I had a particularly bad doer which was a pain as I really had to feed him an extra feed whilst splitting the normal two feeds for the other horses into three so that everyone got fed at once. It's easy for me though as the horses are at home and so am I.

I feed 4 times a day

0600
1200
1730
1030

It is a pain to drive up late but worth it-can check ponies are safe and ok-skip out quickly ensure water and enough haylage etc

I feed poor doers 3 times a day, in the morning (obviously), then about 4 pm when they come in and then an evening feed at around 8pm. It's easy enough as I have them at home and ''work'' at home, too.
Can anybody give a feed for you?

What ever you do do not give your horse more than 2.5kg of feed in total (including chaff and sugarbeet). More than that could lead to ulcers.

I used to feed mine
2.5kg morning
1kg when arrived in the evening
2.5kg when leaving in the evening
