I bought my horse the Dodson and Horrell placid calmer in October to try out as he's quite a nervous and spooky horse but it hasn't worked for him so Iv ordered him the Equine America magnitude calmer to see if that makes a difference. Only thing is I haven't finished the placid calmer and don't want to waste it so was wondering if it's okay to feed him both calmers until the Dodson and Horrell one runs out?

You will be giving him a lot of magnesium if you use both and that may be detrimental to his behaviour, if he is not low in magnesium the magnitude may not work either, one of mine was more spooky on a magnesium calmer.

.... they're pretty good at maintaining a good blood concentration of magnesium, it's REALLY hard to overdose unless you do an IV injection. it will be fine. he will pee out any excess.

as far as other calmers.... i would try more work/turnout, some specific de-spook/desensitization training. I'll be honest, you can't feed obedience, confidence or manners to a horse. You build them.

...and if you still need supplements maybe something with tryptophan (what makes us sleepy when eating turkey- all natural, works a treat).

If it isn't working, how is it any more wasteful to throw it away than it is for him to eat it?

Magnesium based calmers only work if the horse is deficient in it. I found out after trying nearly every one on the market.

I then found Step free from hackup.co.uk they also do powder calmer to be fed daily

Stepfree is amazing stuff, give them a ring they are very helpful

Also look at what you are feeding, stick to high fibre low sugar and starch if possible

Hack up appears to be excellent. Several owners I know have their spooky horses on it.

It is, I only wish it was about years ago sadly only knew about it the last year or so and my horse is now retired but I still use the stepfree if required as he can be a handful to lead in hand (age 37 thinks he's 3)

If Placid didn't work another magnesium based calmer is not likely to I'm afraid. As others have said if the horse isn't deficient in magnesium adding it makes no difference. You won't hurt the horse by feeding both - but you will make is very hard to tell if the new supplement is effective. If there is a change you won't know if it is from the new calmer or from the combination of calmers.
