I have a 16yr old shetland gelding, very prone to laminitis, I'd say it was chronic, he suffers from attacks several times a year. he's recently been doing well, and i'd like to keep him that way.

I've decided to start feeding him the Global Herbs Laminitis Prone Supplement, which i've heard great things about.

So first question, which is the better value and most palatable the LPS liquid or the dry supplement? and what should I feed it with, Happy Hoof, Hoofkind or Safe & Sound?

Any ideas much appreciated.

I'd go for fast fibre or speedibeet, both are low starch and sugar and I've found with mine that feeds the need soaking are better for adding supplements too. You can just use the tiniest amount . I always prefer t feed the dry supplements as in. Y head they're better value for money lol.

Melly was on the Liquid and finds it very palatable, my friends pony is on the powder and she said he isnt too keen - both of them are pigs btw! ;)
I feed Mel Fast Fibre and HiFi Lite, and added her liquid to that, Im not keen on any of the Lami Trust 'recommended' complete feeds, they are still quite hi in 'Mogloo' sugars which arent good for laminitics, so tend to stick with basics.
Mels came off the LP for the wintr, but will go back on it soon. Hope that helps x

yes, Im trying to find an ingredients list for SPILLERS High Fibre Cubes and so far ive just found pages that say its ideal and its endorsed by the LTrust, but not whats actually in the bag, not very transparent and I take Ltrust recommendations with a pinch of salt too. Keeping looking....

Speedibeet and Fast Fibre are both fantastic for lami ponies in my experience.

Contact Allen&Page, they will tell you everything you want to know about any of their feeds, they are by far the most helpful feed manufacturer I have ever contacted (and I have contacted a fair few of them). They will send samples out of some of their feeds too, and they occasionally send out a voucher so you to try a bag of feed at a reduced rate.

I fed my late girl hi fi lite, high fibre cubes, and magnesium, plus the usual garlic etc.
I found the magnesium helped her feet no end, my farrier could not believe the difference. Before going for good old cheap magnesium we used laminaze 5* which did not improve her hoof quality/growth at all

hi yes, I found that rosehip, thanks :)

I want to know whats IN it though...

ingredients list isnt published anywhere on the website apparently, but its

. Wheatfeed
· Rice bran
· Nutritionally improved straw
· Oatfeed
· Vegetable oil
· Sunflower extract
· Molaferm (low sugar alternative to pure molasses)
· Limestone
· Salt
· Vitamins and minerals

am off to google Molaferm. Damn sugary rubbish is in almost everything :o

I would feed the liquid, been chatting to the GH reps and they suggest it over the powder- am putting my lami prone on it :) and he is fed fast-fibre and L-mix by allen and page- again, had and A+P rep out and had them advise- really helpful! :)

I'd want to know the cause also - cushings, etc. However, could be that she is now simply a 'chronic' laminitic after several acute episodes.
Reducing calories was the most important thing in my experience. I had a chronic laminitic, that I inherited from a freind, who even had an episode that was caused by overfeeding hay.
She had to be on a very controlled diet for the rest of her life. I only have her a vit/min supplement and at times farrier formula (she wasn't in hardly any work), weighed the hay and managed her grazing which I timed it to the minute! She was also shod every 5 weeks and 4 at times to keep the feet very balanced. Although she didn't have any more acute episodes I wouldn't say she was ever 'sound' again. Nonetheless, she was comfortable and enjoyed herself into oldish age!
