Feel awful

Basically, I fed Toto a treat for being a good boy, and somehow my little finger ended up in his mouth too

He didn't realise and I couldn't get my finger out, and tried everything. By this point, I was in total agony

In the end, I slapped him on the nose and he let go. My finger was purple, cut and swelling up. I was almost in tears, but felt absolutely awful for smacking Toto

I didn't hit him hard, but I still feel terrible. It wasn't his fault at all, and he probably didn't even know why I smacked him

Did I do the right thing?
 
Yes, you needed to get your finger out, I would have done the same thing, don’t worry yourself. Sure Toto won’t hold it against you, especially if it means he gets more treats.

Hope your finger is better very soon!

Thanks everyone. I know, I'm totally soft with him, hardly ever use my whip when I'm riding, and when I'm on the ground I rarely hit him. I always feel bad if I hit him

Finger is a bit better, I'm now sporting a slightly swollen and cut finger with teeth marks in it

A little tip if he ever does it again that I found worked really well with a headshy horse I used to have (if I'd hit hit he'd had just thrown his head up in panic and taken a finger with it!): Use your index finger on your other hand and put it in his mouth where the bit would go (so no teeth to bite that one too) and use your finger to tickle his tongue and the roof of his mouth - hasn't failed with me yet.

That said, on the few occasions my youngster had taken my finger with his treat (he's not the brightest horse!) I've given him a gental smack on the nose as he hurts when he bits and can be a subborn git when it comes to opening his mouth!

Don't worry about it, no harm done.

I do the same and works everytime.
 
Maia - I'd actually normally do that, I was panicking because I was in loads of pain. He did used to be headshy but he's loads better now, that's why I felt so bad about it. He seemed fine afterwards though
