I had a nice hack with my friend on her Connie today. She was on her sporty big cob. Problem was she let me. Go first cantering around a big field. I couldn’t let S go mad as he is spooky around pheasants so we cantered along having a lovely time until my friend did a slight overtaking manoeuvre which made my horse take off a bit! She realised I was concerned and slowed down but moaned we went too slow. Her boy is over a hand bigger so wasn’t getting to canter much. Wish I’d been braver but it’s not that easy is it?

I hope she doesn't ever want to show the big cob. He will have to learn to canter at the speeding the others. She needs to learn how to maintain a gait in varying speeds.

This annoys me. When people ride together and one whinges about the speed or whatever. It’s so rude. I used to ride with a woman at my old yard who constantly whinged that her horse was bored, wanted to go faster, didn’t like steady trotting. Well I don’t like galloping on stones or hammering my horse on the road, go ride with someone else!

You did the sensible thing taking it steady when you knew a spook was likely.

That really was so thoughtless and damn rude of your riding companion frankly. I have always understood the basic courtesy and safety level for riding with two or more riders means that the lead rider ensures the whole ride is dictated by the comfort and enjoyment level of the least experienced rider or the rider that has confidence issue no matter how experienced they may be. In particular it should always be kept in mind that if one horse/pony has a tendency to get over excited or shoot off unexpectedly you also conduct the ride allowing for that and hopefully making it less likely to happen.

I hope you can find a more understanding and helpful riding companion, this one is not what you need.

Pistolpete please don't feel down. It sounds like your friend was being bad mannered and rude and shouldn't have behaved as she did. On our local guided rides she would have been sent home by the leader and banned from taking part for a while.
Thank you. They are both her horses and she struggles to get sharers. I’ve shared with her for a while now but I do find the horse a challenge at times. Luckily my other share is a complete legend!

No, that's definitely not on you - it's rude to complain like that. If you'd refused to leave a walk, maybe, but complaining because someone isn't cantering as fast as you'd like to is selfish. Riding with others always involves compromise, most of us are aware of that and accept it happily as a necessary trade off for the greater good of company.

If she's normally a nice reasonable person perhaps she was just having a bad day?

She is usually good and is mindful of my nervous wobbles. I’m not unjustified though the boy does have a spook in him!

I'm very selective who I will ride with because of things like this! my connie x tb can get very easily wound up, especially in canter! he won't go in front, so I will only really canter with my mare! or in the past with a friend who had a mare around the same size, who wouldn't f off and leave us behind! but there are other horses I know who'd leave him for dust, and its not worth the risk!

with my mare, she prefers to be in front, so I wont hack with anyone else who has a horse that prefers to be in front! thankfully, she's 17hh so her steady canter is a good speed for someone on a smaller horse if they want to go fast but stay behind :)
