I have just got in from riding my mare and it was horrible. She a rearer and needs re schooling which I was really enjoying doing. Things have been going so well, we have managed the past 5 rides with no rears, taken her on the roads and shes been an angel. So today I thought I would take her on the field behind the yard and do a bit of schooling. I never ride her without someone around as she is unpredicatable and can be dangerous. But today - totally idiotic of me - I thought we would just go for it.

Anyway, all was well, she was in one of her moods but she contained herself enough to get some nice work. So after 20 mins I called it a day and turned her for home nice and relaxed.

She was horrible! She tried jogging so I turned her away from home and then it just got stupid, she was throwing her self every where, going up vertically, bucking.. Eventually we managed to walk home. Every few paces I made her stop and wait then walk again and she was fine. But we were out there for an 2 hours trying to walk calmly home.

I was stupid to take her out with no one about, it could have been nasty! And now I feel really cr*p. She has done this before but there has always been people about just incase and it never bothers me but today I feel a really shaky. And although I managed to get her to do what I wanted in the end, I still feel like I compleatly mucked up!

No real reason for this post, Im just feeling really stupid now

Awww my gelding can be like this and some days i have an amazing ride out/jumping etc and think he's amazing but then the next time he'll prat about, rear.....buck, sulk, plant etc and i really hate him!! x It sometimes ruins me looking forwards to riding him some days and i really have to make myself ride him and then we'll have a really good day and i can see his potential all over again and i love him! x its just so frustrating! x

I see it as a clever horse but it is so annoying but i do think that once he's past this stage then he'll be amazing! x just have to get there....which we are!! x

Every ride can be a different experience. My mare is great but as she's got older the more spookier she has got. Some days she is great and perfect in the wind and other days she's a complete boob and wants to tank off with me.

I think you did well. She obviously had a major strop because she couldn't do what she wanted to do (which was rush off back home).
You got there in the end! I bet next time she will be much better.

They all do things like this sometimes. My gelding started to tow me through his field gate while I was leading him out the other day. I jerked the headcoller and made him wait and he had a massive tantrum. It took me 15 mins of leading him into the field and out of the field before he stopped pulling me around. I did wonder if I was creating a situation but he had to learn.
He's never done it since.
Horrid horses, who'd have em'! ;) :)

You have my sympathies! As per the other posts lots of us have been there and know that inner sinking feeling of "oh b*****s i wish i hadn't got into this" at the same time as you have the frustrated feeling of "you silly horse i'm not even trying to make you do anything, if you would just shut up we'd get there quicker".

One step forward, three steps back and all that when you're schooling/reschooling youngsters and horses with issues - tomorrow is another day :)

Sounds to me like you did well BSJAlove. You eventually got her to do as you wanted, she didn't get her own way which is a lesson learned and hopefully she won't be as determined in future to get her own way, knowing that you won't let her walk all over you! I know the feeling, but try to look on the bright side and see it as a positive, baby steps n'all! :D

Firstly VERY well done for sticking with her and making her do the right thing. I personally think you did everything correctly. I am not sure I would have had the skill to have coped with your mares tantrum. Do not feel bad as I think you have in fact done much better with sticking with it and getting her to do what you wanted. If you are going out on your own again might be an idea to write a note on a tack room door/yard white board as to time you left and direction.

Once again VERY well done.
