I've been struggling a bit with my new(ish) boy over the last 3 months -- partly due to lack of time (I've been ill and then my little boy got measles) and partly due to him seeming to have a phobia about heights. Let me explain - our school has a drop at the far end, it has been built up on a slope so there is a quite sheer drop on the otherside of the fence from the surface (IYSWIM) . Every time I have taken him down that end he shies away and runs for the gate... So over the last few months I've been doing things such as lunging him down that end and turning him out in there with haynets tied down that end and standing for ages down that end etc etc to no avail -- even on the lunge and in hand he wouldn't go down there... There's me feeling oh so sorry for my boy...

Anyhow today, I put him in a double bridle (usually in a french link snaffle) as we will be showing him in 3 weeks and need to get him used to it again and low and behold, all of a sudden the far end is no longer scary and he CAN go down there and whats more do some work at that end too... I think he's been taking me for a ride ... Ho hum feel a bit of a fool now for the hours I've spent mucking about getting him 'used' to it.

Don't worry I've had my new boy 3 months as well. He is extremly spooky and struggles in the arena due to the scary things surrounding. He can't go in front and always must follow a horse and an hours hack is a bit much for him, no way can he have impulsion or extend........
Until today, 12 mile fun ride. No spooks and we did most in a fast trot/canter/gallop generally in front of our companion. Last field we were still cantering sideways with excitement.
I think someone has blown his cover, he no longer is as old and tired as he pretends... And I have been a fool
