The YO where I keep the girls wants them off because they have eaten every blade of grass in site and the weather and Doris's big carthorse feet have turned the place boggy. We are putting out hay but he is really unhappy about the state of the field. He doesn't want us to use the "summer" field until the weather is better and so has asked us to come back in a couple of months.

Which has left me with a dilemma. I've got first refusal on another 4 acres that belong to a lady. I've rented from her before and tbh it was a bit of a nightmare. She insists on being paid cash and refuses to give receipts. Yes, it's all a bit dodgy but as long as my horses have grass I'm happy to turn a blind eye.

BUT she drinks heavily. Last time she kept forgetting that I paid her and kept making scenes. Last time she turned up at my Dad's house and demanded money from him when I'd already paid her, and then there was the time she padlocked my horses in for the same reason. We refused to pay her again and resorted to using a pair of bolt croppers and a trailer.

We're "friends" again now because I helped her out when a couple of undesirables wouldn't get off her land. But I know that she still has a drink problem. I can smell it on her breath.

I don't know whether to move my girls to hers. Hubby thinks it will turn out to be another nightmare. Everyone is desperate for grazing but nobody stays on her land for more than a few weeks. I think that just proves that everyone has the same problems with her.

If I don't move the girls there it means they will have to go in with my boys. That means 2 big horses, a youngster and a horrid Welshy all on two acres. Hubby prefers to do this and put round bales out in the field. But the grass would end up trashed.

The third alternative would be to get rid of my big field ornament. But as she's a partly backed 12 year old ex broodmare with unknown breeding I don't know where she'll end up. :( Plus I love her lots - she's my best friend - so selling her would have to be my very, very last resort.

Should I move them to the mad woman's place or should I try and keep them all together?

I dunno what to do and hubby keeps hinting at selling Doris  .

Tough decision. I would just put them all in together with round bales. Sounds like you'd have a nightmare on your hands if you moved to this lady.

Grass can be pretty amazing. If the girls can move back out after a couple of months I'd have thought you'd be able to get the boys field back to a reasonable state pretty quickly come spring.

Good luck whatever you decide :)

Could you teach your horses to levitate?!!! :)

Now for the more serious answer.......
Is it worth trying the lady again but having a book you write in and BOTH sign and date each time you give her the cash? This could give you a few weeks at least. If this turns out to be a nightmare again then you could go for plan b and put them all in together with hay. It would save your fields being quite so trashed.

Hope things go well for you.

I'd have a go at this ^ first, but if she won't sign for payment recieved, leave and don't bother with her anymore. Obviously levitating horses would be the best option tho :D

well why dont you ask her if you can rent the 4 acres for 3 months for x pounds? if agreeable and you know the horses will be safe in her field then pay for the 3 months. get her to sign that she has recieved x amount for 12 week s grazing from x date to x date. then swap the girls back at the end of the 12 weeks! preferable to having them al stuck together in deep bog or stables.
