Okay so here goes.....

I'm a newbie in these parts and have spent many an evening over the last few weeks reading all the wonderful posts and BE Reports on here after having ridden my boy under floodlight in the cold and feeling somewhat out of my depth.

Okay, so Richmond is 9 weeks away and it's supposed to be my first event.....!

My horse came off the race track in June 08, and I bought him in October 08 and haven't as yet done any cross country schooling (except for jumping the occasional hedge), or jumped a round of show jumps apart from what i've put up in the school with rugs and savings bales to make the scariest fillers i can make and am still struggling to get a balanced canter at the best of times!!!!!
This is the bit where I add that I work 4 days a week in the Civil Service, have a 10 month old baby and a husband who spends more time out of the country working than he does in this country!!!

Oh dear....it looks worse now i've written it down, perhaps I'd better aim for Hutton in June instead, either that or I have some serious work to do! I haven't competed since before I had my daughter and I'm starting to regret the day I came up with the silly idea!!

Love reading everbody's reports and seeing the piccies, will keep you posted on the chaos if anyone's interested!

I think you need to find yourself some local unaff SJ and dressage between now and Richmond and get off XC schooling

YES, it seems daunting now, but going out cold to a BE event IS daunting, so go have some fun between now and then. Yes, difficult, you have a baby, but take a friend with you to hold your daughter - choose low key events, very important.

Dont worry 9 weeks is a long time and at least light nights arnt to far away. Just try to go to as many unaffiliated showjumpings and dressage as you can! Good Luck

Don't worry about it - you should definitely go to Richmond - I took one of mine last year who was on her 2nd XC after one 2ft 6 run with only one training session several months before and she just took it all in her stride. The XC starts smaller and works it's way up with no narrow fences in the BE90 / Intro - SJ is in a lovely huge all weather arena too!

Hutton is a more complex track imo and you will benefit greatly from going to Richmond before hand. Hexham is also a nice one if that's not too far.

Go for it, I am sure you'll be fine and Good luck

9 weeks is plenty of time and I'm sure you'll be able to find plenty of unaffiliated stuff to go to before Richmond.

Thanks very much jmptoit, i'm from further south and most of the events up here are unknown to me.... Hexham is also a possibility, I suppose Hutton is appealing as it's close to home!

Don't get me wrong Hutton is a lovely event too I just wouldn't recommend a first BE.

Totally agree with this

Hexham is very nice though as an early run.
