Just want a small pity party really

10 weeks ago I injured my ankle, and it hasn't healed so I am having it operated on tomorrow

So I've managed to ride twice in those 10 weeks, both of which were very painful. I couldn't even rise to the trot.

On Sunday out hacking he was very fresh. He got fairly strong in canter and I just freak out a bit about things like that. I'm not very confident. I've had him 2 years and he has had these odd moments that make me think he's almost too much for me. They're not very often. One week he can be a donkey and the next like a racehorse.

The girl who is riding him for me said he was pretty fresh today too. He is being ridden twice a week by her, for about 45 mins. Any more and we found he was getting too fit.

He is on no hard feed. He's turned out about 8 hours a day. He's 7 years old.

I don't know. I guess I just feel blue in general but am worried time and time again that he's too much for me.

Anyone else have fresh horses at the moment?

I'm feeling EXACTLY the same atm! I've only just got back into riding after 20 years and have only had my Cob for 6 months. I got more and more confident and then suddenly she became really fresh and I went back to square one. As the weather is getting worse, I'm finding more excuses not to ride and my friend sometimes rides her for me but I know its a vicious circle as I need to ride to get my confidence back but the longer I don't, the worse she is going to be! Can't really offer any advice (will leave that to the more experienced on this forum) but just to let you know you're not alone! Sorry about your ankle BTW! x

Two 45 minutes rides a week are not going to do much for his fitness. Keep to walk and go out for at least an hour each time. Going for a whizz is only going to fire up his mind more and more, especially if it is cold and/or windy.

Hope the op goes well and sorts your ankle out finally.

thanks for the replies.

As I said, I can't ride at the moment, and probably won't be able to until about Feb.

I can't afford to have him ridden any more than that.

One session is schooling, and one is a hack, with maybe one canter.

Why dont you turn him out untill spring? He wont care as long as he has food and is comfortable, then you can do some ground work stuff with him when your feeling better before getting back on him when its warmer, lighter and he hopefully wont be feeling so fresh. Then you dont have to worry about paying some one to ride him either.

Hi dafthoss

I guess I could do, but then I wouldn be worried that I would have all the hard work to do in the Spring! I'm just not a very good or confident rider, so would probably end up paying for help then too!

Maybe it's just the sudden cold snap making him feel fresh.

You could save the money you are spending on someone riding him from now untill spring you would then have a fair ammount saved for help then. I would think you could do the initial lunging and what not to start him off before getting on him. But remember he wont be fit so will be less fresh and the cold weather often makes them fresh so the warmer spring weather should also help. Then spend some of the money on a good instructor who will work with you to boost your confidence or possibly get a sharer or horseless person to help, there are plenty out there that I'm sure would love to help without needing paying.

My mare is very fresh at the moment, she's only on 1scoop of HH and weighed and soaked hay, I do ride her every day or night and she's a pain at the moment. We have been at current yard for nearly 5years but along one side of the arena are woods, we have seen fox's lately but I think she's seen lion

Our 20metre circles at the moment consist of 1 half lovely walk or trot, the other half we go into orbit

No matter what I do I cant seem to take her mind off the lion
