As some of you know i have been schooling my boy for about 4 months. From basically not entering a school for two years, (he is 8yr), 4 months later we are working in an outline and going out once a week competeing in various fun things. So really we have done very well. so i am told!!!

Anyway, i was getting down about it all as i am a perfectionist and want us to be perfect now not in the future now!! After weeks of mooping around feeling sorry for myself, and thinking i couldnt do it and that i was ruining him, i kinda had a lightbulb moment and realised, that it is more than fine for us to be a 'work in progress'. In fact i love that statement!!

Now instead of getting on and thinking right we have to get this right or have a really good perfect schooling session, or scrutinizing why he wont do this or that, i have changed my thinking completely.

I now get on and see what he will give me on the day and when we do get something right or perfect i feel good, instead of thinking why cant it be like that all the time. I am having agreat time now and finally have let myself feel ok about any mistakes, we both make.

All that has actually changed is my thinking about it but i feel like i have let myself off the hook so to speak, dont get me wrong i still want the same perfection as before but i can cope alot better with it coming slowly. :)

Strawberries and cream for anyone who got this far!!!!!!

It takes years to train a horse- try to remember that when things dont go too well. And as you say, you can look back and see how far you have come. Some horses take longer than others and you can only ever go as fast as they physically and mentally can and within your own ability. Dont let oter people tell you you should be able to do more!

Your lightbulb moment sounds good to me!

The sense of relief i have now after i stopped beating myself up feels like a weight has been lifted and i am now free to enjoy my horse to the full. I love it!!!
