My horse had IRAP therapy in his coffin joint 2 weeks ago and has been on box rest. We're back at the vets today. I've got the day off work but as I don't need to leave the yard til 12.30 I asked my friend to give him hay & a feed this morning so I could have a few lazy hours. I've been mucking out twice a day (see post on dirty horses), spent hours at the weekend grazing him in hand, as well as squeezing in as much time as I can during the week to spend with him.

Why do I feel really guilty sitting here having a couple of hours to myself when I know he's not lacking anything and I need a break. Does anyone else torture themselves like this?

Sound advice - have just made myself a cup of coffee!
It doesn't help that his box rest has co-incided with me being really busy at work. Not that I get any sympathy when I tell people I'm running a training programme for firemen!

I have ben like that recently because I have had back problems for 5 months, so my horse has been roughed off until I am able to ride again. There were times when it was too much to get to his field and pat him on the head, never mind brush him or spend time with him...I was in too much pain! I felt awful because he would follow me about nickering at me to scratch him with the curry comb and I did nto have the strength to do it. I had to leave with him looking miserable, knowing full well he was itchy and just wanted some attention. It was so very hard and yes I felt guilty and still do as I feel I left him to it. But sometimes these things happen and we need a bit of time...enjoy it and stop worrying...your horse will be fine!

I know - I just feel so sorry for him as he's getting really fed up with being in. I trotted him up on Saturday and he still didn't look quite right so I expect the vet will want to do another treatment, which means another 2 weeks.

I've drunk the coffee so time to get off to see him!

I hope your back problem is improving and you can enjoy your horse again soon.
