Feels lame when ridden,but when I bring him home and trot him up ,is sound

As title n On several occasions since this Jan (so not just on hard ground) I have set out for a ride and felt my horse to be lame. I have brought him home, and have trotted him up, or on occasions lunged him on our return, and he has been sound, On one occasion he remained lame on out return, and the vet came and saw him, he started lameness investigations and nerve blocked his foot to discover the lameness was not there. He asked me to come to the surgery for more investigations,but he was sound on the day so no more could be done. He was not able to advise me to stop riding or not. It has happened again since he went to the surgery, but I have not been able to produce him lame for the vet to see again. I just dont know what to do to get him sorted.

maybe he has a sore back under his saddle area??? just an idea, my horse used to go lame when ridden but sound when trotted up and in general and ended up having physion out to him, they told me he had a few twinges and sore areas around saddle area and that it was pushing on his nerves when he was ridden causing him to be lame.
 
Sometimes when a horse is sometimes lame sometimes sound they tell you to work it to make it lame so the vet actually has something to work with. Obviously that's not just something you would do yourself though, that's something you would do under veterinary supervision. Perhaps your vet could get you a referral to one of the centres like Newmarket or Rossdales for a ridden workup and they would be able to advise you on what you would need to do to make him lame enough to give them something to look at. Sometimes they keep them in for a few days and have their riders ride them too (with your permission) so they can try to find out exactly what is causing the lameness.
Talk to your vet and I agree, you do need to get to the bottom of it.
 
Did not want to write a very long post with all the details, but as part of trying to sort it out he has had a new saddle fitted. I asked my vet about this possibility and he told me that back problems cause hind leg lameness, when the vet saw him he was lame in the near fore.

My gelding has been lame (more lame from me feeling it than him looking lame from the ground.) when being ridden, but only on the right rein. Sound when trotted up, lunged flexion tests etc.
He went to the vet last week, sound as anything untill ridden on the right rein again.. nerve blocked and xrays show he has done something to his deep digital flexor tendon deep within his foot. Its a massive shock to me, i just though he could be tight in his back or something! - didnt expect this outcome at al!

Hope i haved worried you, but my advice is to keep working him. Then take him to the vets, ride him there for them and get the bottom of the problem. Good luck!
 
Also it is so intermittant, the answer to the question "What do I have to do to make him go lame?" is just set of to ride on one of those days, my vet talked about the possibility of a joint mouse, but when i talked about it a few people told me they had that ,but when it affectd them they were really limping, whereas my horse is only lame when I come to trot,
 
Showjump, was your horse nerve blocked, and the problem found to be in the foot ,and then diagnosed after a scan? because my horses problem is not in his foot. I hope uyour horse makes a good recovery, how is he doing?
 
Ditto did you ride him for the vet? R was lame in ridden work but not in hand twice, once due to saddle problems and once due to tooth problems. I would suggest a really good physio and a really good dentist give him the once over.
 
No, I did not ride him for the vet, because that was the one occasion he stayed lame and the vet could see that he was lame when i trotted him up. The subsequent problem has been that the lameness is so intermittant even when ridden .

I have just had the same issue with my Gelding, but on the left rein when ridden! The vet came over yesterday and nerve blocked/flexioin tested/xrayed, etc and could't really find anything so suggested corrective shoeing. His shoes have been removed and we will see what he is like after 10 days box rest. I was also very suprised as the lameness seems so random!

I'm have "similar" problem, but mine started with him hurting his shoulder being a total pratt trying to load him for over 2 hours, and then him slipping, at which point I gave up, they do your head in.
 
My farrier had a look back in feb and found that his withers were sore on the right side from his saddle, he now has a new saddle that was fitted to a template of his body. He is barefoot and has been for over 2 years.
