I rode my horse in the arena last night and whilst trotting - even though I was on the right diagonal it felt like I was on the wrong one - sorry, I hope this makes sense....

Does anyone have any ideas why this would be - does this indicate hind limb lameness, stiffness or a back problem?

All advice gratefully received!

Sunny is exactly the same. On the left rein the correct diagonal is easy and automatic. On the right rein - his stiff (and blind) side - I have to deliberately sit/rise to what feels like the wrong diagonal because I know that's the right one, if you know what I mean. Sunny is 23 and I've discussd this problem with my RI coz he's done this for a few years now. But if your ned has only just started doing it then you might need someone else to watch you ride and see if there's a low level lameness there. Might be worth lunging him without a rider to see if he goes the same as with a rider up. Any concerns, vet x

Yes, it could indicate stiffness or unsoundness in the horse, or it could be that he is compensating for something amiss with you. Have you had a fall recently, tweaked or strained something which might have put you out of skeletal alignment? If you can't pin-point a cause with your horse get yourself seen by a chiropractor. Like horses, few people are truly "straight" but we grow so used to being that way it feels like the norm.

What a coincidence MCM! Sunny lost his eye 3 years ago, after a desperate 6 month battle to save it. When he came to me (with 2 eyes but both of them chronically weeping gunge and ooze) he had no passport and nobody knew how his name should have been spelt. He's such a kind, generous and forgiving sweetheart that I wanted his name to reflect his nature and how he makes people around him feel. So he's Sunny. Sunny by name and Sunny by nature. His posh show name (ha ha, for tiny walk and trot tests) is The Sunbeam. He's my hero xxx
