Well just looking at the forecast for another period of "heavy snow", although Sunday does say heavy RAIN (yay!)

Now wondering whether to get pads on the front feet of mine so that the snow stays away??

(Reason being that pads stop snow from balling, but not as good as proper snowball pads)

Currently using vaseline and plasticine (the latter being quite expensive!)

We used Vaseline and plasticine, none worked too great... tried hoof oil and worked a little better than vaseline and plasticine

Well according to my extensive search of the web a spray cooking oil called "pam" is favoured by Americans for any!

Tarrsteps - what happens if you have the bubble ones in and there isn't any snow?? (guessing the minute I add pads snow goes, so worth doing from that perspective!)

If you have a horse that will let you spray his feet with an aerosol can!

The "bubble" isn't very deep so it isn't a problem. To be honest, they aren't nearly as popular anymore as most people prefer the rim pads but they're a good option for a horse that has to wear full pads anyway.

If you go to the link above, they have then on there, about 1/4 of the way down the page.

They are like a regular plastic/rubber rim pad - a horseshoe shaped pad, slightly wider than the shoe - but along the inside edge they have a sort of "tube", which squishes, so there is no solid edge for the snow to pack against or metal for it to stick to. Since horses in some climates might need snow pads for half the year it's a better option than full pads. We also usually put borium or tiny road studs on the shoes as well, to help with traction.

Of course, taking the shoes off works too.
