Feet - usual or not?

I brought a friends horse in from the field yesterday and when I came to pick his feet out it looked like he'd got a stone wedged between his frog and shoe on both front feet. On closer inspection I realised it wasn't stones so wondering what it could be. Only way I can explain it is that it looked like horn growth - very unusual. Not sure it's relevant but he's not got much frog and is quite flat footed.

When friend came up later she said she'd not noticed it before.

Any thought anyone please?

If barefoot and in a reasonable amount of work, a healthy footed horse should keep the bars in check.

If barefoot and on soft ground only, or when shod.....the hoof care provider will help to keep the bars in check.

If a horse has significant infection to the frog or pain to the heel area, the bars can sometimes spread around the frog and protect the painful area.

Some horse just have big bars though and it's normal for them.
