The new FEI rules seem to be based on bits designed around Herm Sprenger's catalogue. As I just posted on COTH my understanding of the small print on the required dimensions of bits is that they match exactly those shown in the German 2014 rule book http://www.flse.lu/files/Downloads/2014/LPO_Gebissordnung_2014.pdf
The figure 55 in that rule book shows a KK Ultra if I'm not mistaken and all the critical dimensions shown define the dimensions of the Sprenger bits. It looks like the FEI have been persuaded to take their products as defining what's legal. That will rule out huge numbers of alternatives and enforce a uniformity of bit design that cannot serve horse welfare as the FEI says it values above all else.
