Fell Ponies, show me yours!

Last week my new 2 year old Fell calmly strolled into our lives and I'm totally in love with him, he's just such a happy, cheery, clever pony who wants to be with you and involved in everything. So far we've been for a few walks round the fields and his leading is perfect, even when he saw the huge flock of resident geese for the first time he just stopped and looked for a second then carried on. We've stood at the end of the drive and watched the traffic go by and he couldn't care less, he doesn't seem to be scared of anything. He learns so quickly and just does anything you ask of him like he's been doing it forever. I'm definitely a convert to Fells!

He looks a lovely pony, do be very aware that Fell ponies learn very quickly from people they trust.... all training is absorbed, the good and the not so. So, get it right as much as you can x

I've already been lurking in that group ?
He does indeed learn ridiculously quickly, I haven't had a youngster for while and I'm used to my old pony, who after living with me for 18 years just automatically knows what he should be doing, being very careful to get it right as much as possible. He's just so willing, completely the opposite to my welsh pony who had to be carefully persuaded that he should do something when he was young.

Yep. They remember EVERYTHING. So if something happens and they don’t particularly like it they remember. My fell clunked her teeth on her bit when I was bitting her. Couldn’t get so much as a headcollar on her for weeks!

She was a fab little pony. Sadly not big enough for me and I just didn’t gel with her, they’re fantastic characters though! Your boy is lovely.

I've owned mine for almost a year since he was 4. I absolutely love him to bits. He is such a character. Makes me laugh so much. Frighteningly clever, he was an absolute doddle to back.

They are smashing little ponies and we just have so much fun together.

I love fells, some lovely ponies on this thread.
We had a fell mare at the rda I volunteer at. Lovely pony and a pleasure to lead, always forward and happy to have a trot. A real character with views on things but always well mannered.
I rode her once and despite me being 5'8" but light, and her being just over 14 hands she was a nice ride, forward but safe. And plenty in front of you.

Everyone's ponies are amazing, love seeing all the photos!

This morning he's gone out in the big field for the 1st time, he was a star to turnout, I made the mistake of moving my older supposedly sensible pony first, he was busy zooming round with his tail blowing like a flag and doing his best welsh snorts, new baby pony was not in the least bit bothered and stood nicely while I faffed with the gate, he has amazing manners. He waited till he'd walked a safe distance away from me before joining in with the zooming, but his belly soon took over and he got down to the far more important job of eating. He is such an amazing fun pony.

I bought the mare in the photos in my first post as an untouched 3 yo . 9 months later she surprised as all with this hairy little boy !

( And for the stats enthusiasts I am a shade under 5'10" and he was 13.3hh.)

Here's my Sleddale Ben at the Ponies of Britain WHP final at Peterborough, 1988? (I think we were 7th as we knocked one down due to my bad riding, should have kicked on ?)

Amazing photos, Everyone looks like they've had such a great time with all of their ponies! I can't believe I've been missing out on the fell pony fun all these years!
Just been out to check how he's getting on in the new field and he came straight over for cuddles and to see if there was anything he could "help" with, a Fell pony is not a good helper when you're trying to repair fences, gave him some hay to keep him occupied and he promptly spread it round and lay in it and ate round himself, he's had a busy morning running round and meeting the new neighbours!

I've always secretly wanted a surprise foal but tend to end buying geldings so obviously not much chance of it happening ?

Gloi, top and bottom, my current mount who is Lunesdale sire and dam. Henry & Lizzie. I loved the way Lizzie moved when out as a yearling so moved quickly when a daughter came up!
2nd is my late Townend mare Libby by Castlehill Bellman out of a Sleddale mare.
Next is Drybarrows Lady Jane, a mare I backed and produced for Jane Glass, cracking ride and jump.
Tebay Silver by the prolifically used T.Campbelltown Victor, I had his half brother too (also grey)
I've had or produced more Tebay and Drybarrows, plus a few Wolds, 3 x Barncrosh, Mercury, a Dene, Hardknott, Baronshill, Waverhead, and Rachel's M.Millstream, plus more I've probably forgotten!

I remember you most from those two Worlds ponies ?.
Sadly in my 60s now I'm nowhere near as brave as I was in those days when faced with a jump, but it's good to look back on.
I got my first Fell for Xmas 1972 ?

I don't have many pics of me riding my Fell but he was one of the best ponies I have ever had! His name was Lownthwaite Jasper - by Townend Gillie out of Lownthwaite Skylark.

When I need another pony to ride I will be getting myself a other Fell.

Elf my neighbour has a pony by Ghillie and out of Skylark, so full brother to your Jasper. He is still alive although getting on a bit now. His nickname is 'Golden Balls' because he can do no wrong

Jasper could do no wrong either! He was the most perfect pony you could wish for! I am glad it was a family trait.

I’ve had mine almost a year now, took the photo today at our first clinic together. She’s not an easy pony - opinionated, headstrong and will never forget anything! Super clever which can be both good and bad ? Feel like I’m finally understanding what makes her tick, can’t wait for lots more fun with her.

Hope your first clinic went well! I'm hoping mine turns out to be fairly straight forwards ? So far it seems his main priorities are eating and being a big lovable attention seeker who has a tendency to fall asleep if you stroke his ears.

Hopefully you can see the photos. Somewhere I also have a photo of us jumping a puissance wall but I cannot find it. My Fell, Lownthwaite Rob II. He was never particularly hairy. Brilliant show jumper. We were members of the West Sussex Riding Club showjumping team. We won the Southcoast Championship one year. We were in the team for about 3 years. He jumped a double clear every time. One of the team’s dad used to say ‘have you jumped your clear round yet?’ No pressure!! Lost him at age of 21, many years ago, still miss him.
