Hi,

I'm hoping someone can give me an overview on turnout and handler attire for showing a Fell Pony in-hand.

I've been riding a Fell Pony for the past year, but coming from South Africa, I'm not really familiar with the breed as there arent any in SA. I've also never taken part in a showing event of any sort. I'm considering entering a show next weekend and will probably just enter the Mountain & Moorland (excl Welsh) class as well as the veteran class to get a feel for what is expected. Ridden classes are not an option right now as she can't hold the canter for a full lap around the ring and an extended canter... pfft, what's that - can you eat it? :D

From what I've researched, I gather that the Fell should be shown natural and untrimmed - but would I still varnish hooves for presentation? Oil around eyes & muzzle? Patterns on the quarters?

I don't want to rush out and buy everything in one go just for this show, however, I don't want to appear to be disrespectful of the rules. Could I show her in my dressage / caveson bridle without the flash?

As for the handler, do I have to wear a tweed jacket? Would I be ok with off white breeches (beige/cream) with a black riding jacket and a standard black riding helmet?

Any tips / advice would be greatly appreciated!

Some hoof oil is fine as is a little oil around the muzzle/ eyes but keep it to a minimum so not too obvious or like make up, no quarter marks on a Fell, bridle will be fine as long as it is plain, no bling browband.
I think black jacket/ breeches looks wrong for in hand unless you are rushing to do ridden afterwards so would prefer a pair of cream or light coloured, assuming she is dark, trousers/ cords, short boots, a shirt and tie with a waistcoat/ jacket or v neck jumper that is smart but casual and sensibly coloured, if you have nothing else wear your riding kit but you will probably be more comfortable in something else, at local level judges are not too critical as long as the pony is reasonably smart.

black jackets with white jods are never correct for any M&M during the daytime (can use them in evening performances).

If you dont want to buy a tweed jacket then go for trousers, boots, shirt, tie. then maybe a smart V neck jumper (green or brown colour) or a waistcoat (not black) or a very smart Gillet can look ok (navy blue or green can look very smart). At the moment because its so cold you are likely to get away with a smart waterproof coat as well.

here is an example with a waistcoat
