Just as the title suggests - I am looking for another native. I realise the obvious difference in height - although they all have the weight carrying ability - but which would you choose out of personal preference? Welsh vs Fell!

Santa forgot to bring Saffy any 5'6" full neck turnout rugs - if anyone would like to part with one please PM me.

Both have their plusses and minuses. Fells can be stubborn, D's can be pretty exciteable.

Personally I'd have a D. Gorgeous knee action, wonderful presence and hey...it's a welsh!!

depends a little bit on what you were hoping to do with it, I wouldn't choose a fell for example if I was planning to do much jumping - all things being equal I would go with the fell purely for the slightly more steady outlook on life

I have had one of each

They were completely different so here are the pros and cons that I found:

Fell
Pros:
Sensible
Laid back and placid
Loyal
Fun
Will have a go at anything
Beautiful
Hardy

Cons:
Opinionated
Stubborn

Welsh D
Pros:
Nice mover
Big personality
Capable of anything
Good jumper
Fun
Lively
Beautiful
More variety of colours than the Fell (silly but true!)

Cons:
Can be sharp
Opinionated
Slightly more nervy
Can be quite rude if not firmly handled

I loved them both for different reasons, my welshy is the sort of horse that I would buy again for riding but I plan to breed Fells when I get older. Both of mine were lovely but I would try both breeds and see which suits you best.

Welsh have no brains and tend to annoy me but then i don't really like many fells, completly different so it depends what you want it for, really random choices

Fells for me, but only if you are prepared to get addicted! I started with one and now have 7 and am doing a bit of breeding!

Best thing is to go to a couple of really good studs and decide which breed is for you. Probably easier to get a good Welsh D than a Fell as there are fewer of them and, as I already said, we do tend to collect them!

I think it all depends what you want to do with it...Has anyone seen a welsh D X Fell...try n get the best of both..lol....just a thought as ive never seen one!

Well I have a welsh and she is very clever, but can be a right madame. I also have a fresian (big version of a fell) ! who is a star and I look after a fell mare thats as big a madame as my welsh mare. Its not possible to say which is best as to me they all have their special quialities. I would say that for an easy life a fell is very genuine but my welsh will test you if you have a weakness a welsh will find it and play up on it. As to my big frisian well he just the best of all combind has the action of a welsh, but the lay backness of the fell however both the girls rule over him in the field.

How about a highland they are very good horses! I love fell's and welshies too but i think i would go with a fell have a bit better mannerisms but then i suppose its on the trainer and rider too!Good luck anyway!

Would prob go for the Welsh D, have a coloured mare who is Welsh D x TB and she is great, quick learner, willing, kind and very very loyal, as for the fell, height might be the only thing that would put me off......... Love my little Welsh D....

Has to be a Fell! Second thoughts maybe not-you'd be in competiton with me! Mind you,I wouldn't say no to a Welsh D either!

That is one of the biggest misunderstandings about Fells - they are NOT easy. They are very, very clever and know what they can get away with and what they can't.

I am bringing on one of mine just now and he is a right little Kevin and in my experience most Fells tend to have at least a year where they are little sods. When they come through that though they are very rewarding ponies to own.

I get really annoyed at the breed encyclopaedias that say Fells are gentle, amenable, suitable for children, etc - maybe some are, but I've owned 8 and only one of them was suitable for a child (and even he had his moments).

I certainly wouldn't choose a Fell for a child's pony, over a NF for example, I have always considered them to be strong and hardy and suitable for adults to ride.

Of course Fells are clever, they are native ponies, therefore it is in the breeding, however as adults I think they are steadier than Welsh types, as a sweeping generalisation. Not that Welsh feistiness is a fault, it is one of the attractions of the breed - if that is what you are looking for.

In a free choice, i wouldn't have either - I would have another Highland!

I am so glad to see that! I was getting worried because I thought it was just mine that had attitude, being the first and only Fell I've owned (so far!)

Definately a Welsh! The only Fell I have ever met was a man killer and we had to ask the owner to leave our yard - you couldnt go in the field with it - it was mental!

Although i understand thats just one and doesnt mean they are all like it!

I have both and i really don't think i can choose i love natives, but glad to see the posts on Fells being opinionated etc makes you feel better!! As for Welsh x Fell my Fell mare is due in May to my welsh D stallion so should be interesting!!
