Fell yesterday and big knee!!

My daughter took our mare xc yesterday and she fell coming out of the water. She cut her knee although the cut isnt deep and she doesnt appear to be lame with it. Difficult to tell though as she's lost her shoe and is a big woosey pussy when she loses her shoes. so not much point in ttrying to trot her up as I know she'd be short without it. Thing is - should I call the vet? This morning her knee's quite big which I would prob expect after she'd hit it, but she's weight-bearing and happy in the field to wonder about.

I have spoken to my vet who says see how she is after the shoe goes back on, and cold-hose it and keep it clean. I've put wound powder on and will be off back up to see her tonight to redo.

Have I done the right thing? Should I have called the vet? Do I give her a little bute to try and take the swelling down?

Sounds like the right thing to me. My vet usually tells me to bute and cold hose pretty much everything

How about speaking to your vet again re. giving her some bute? Obviously you don't want to mask any lameness once her shoe is back on, so I might be inclined to hold off and see how you get on with cold hosing.

Sounds like a bruise to me, so I probably wouldn't worry too much, unless her knee is still big in a couple of days.

Speaking from tragic experience, any injury/cut that close to a joint capsule IMO should be seen by the vet within 8 hours. Where exactly is the cut and is there any heat/swelling coming from the knee and tendon areas? As Rana pointed out, it may well be nothing and once she has her shoe back on then she may well be fine. I have become paranoid about joint capsules and have had my vet draw a diagram for my liveries showing where all the joint capsules are on the body.

Hope your daughter is ok after her tumble and that ponio comes sound. Dont mean to sound like the Grim Reaper here so apologies if I have set you into a panic.

Thanks for your replies. I have been up to see her this evening and she is defo sore on hard ground but is fine in the field. Blacksmith coming at 8am and spoke to vet who told me to ring him asap if she was lame with shoe on. Cut is actually above the knee joint - and is really only a graze, which has scabbed over nicely today.

Llwyncwn - I am pretty paranoid too about knees as lost my beloved cob mare out hunting when she put her foot down a hole and broke her knee. Infection set in there with in a matter of hours. Why do these things happen? Daughter is fine thanks - a bit stiff but ok, I thin kshe just blames herself for interferring with pony's stride. Thinks if she hadnt checked her she wouldnt have put in extra short stride and hit the jump out of the water. That's life.

My horse grazed her knee last week rolling in the field (don't ask) but got caught in the Electric fencing. The graze was right on her knee and that is all it was a graze, didn't even bleed. Washed it anyway with hibiscrub and "tried" to put wound powder on it but she was having none of it. Anyway the next day it was like a balloon, lame as she couldn't bend it but no heat at all. Let her walk off in the field and she promptly set off at a gallop. Came in from field and the swelling had gone down considerably. Cold hosed and went down even more. But swelled again on being stabled. It is now a week after and she is sound and no swelling.
