Daisy has suddenly started peeing in the house. She has previously been very very good about going outside but it seems that over the Christmas period something has gone wrong and she has started peeing in the house, today she has been once on the carpet in the lounge whilst we were sat 5ft away watching tv and the. Just now we popped out to the local shop, we were gone for less than 10 mins but came back to a puddle on the sofa.
This is accident 6 or 7 this week.
She is showing no signs of being unwell, she is bright as a butto, her gums do seem a bit dark compared to our other dogs, her temp seems normal.

thoughts on what could be wrong and/or thoughts on how best to nip this in the bud?

Rule out a uti before anything else. They can appear quite bright with a uti so always best to get a sample checked. Other than that it could just be stress. All the changes that Christmas brings can be quite disturbing to cats and dogs. I use zylkene for my Rottie when were coming up to a period of change. It really helps her but takes a few days to get into her system. I also use a cbd oil especially for animals when needed.

I'd check for a urine inflection. If not it could be the change in routine with Christmas. Make sure you clean up.well as Russell will encourage her to go in the same spot. Make sure she gets lots of opportunities to go out.

Take her back to how you would train a puppy, feed her and take her out for a wwe-wait with her but ignore her til she goes, wake up out, play out etc, is she loose in the house and has she always been loose.
Is she peeing more on a walk, drinking more, does it smell more?

Go to vet- sudden change in toilet habits could be anythign from behavioural, to diabetes to uti - take a urine sample if you can. also go back to 'puppy training' basics ie supervised outside, reward wen goes outside, not left unsupervised in whole house etc.

Get a urine sample and pop off to your vet. Don’t go empty handed (without a sample) or your vet will be diagnosing on symptoms only and, from what you say, she doesn’t have any others.
Of course it could be behavioural but more likely a simple urine infection that’s cleared up with a course of penicillin. Girlies are far more prone to these things just by the nature of their anatomy and ground clearance when having a tinkle :)

Lots of good advice here already. Make sure the urine sample is fresh as they start to degrade almost as soon as they're captured. I tend to collect one in the car park at the vets surgery if possible with a backup not quite as fresh one in case Jake doesn't comply in the car park. My vets surgery want them handed in at reception, to be tested immediately, rather than waiting for your appointment slot. They spin it down for crystals too as well as checking for blood, protein etc. Make sure she drinks plenty, flushing is important with any sort of UTI. We encourage Jake by adding a tiny amount of milk to water. Good Luck.

Thanks, she has always been loose in the house, she has never been crated.
The wee barely smells at all but ive just found another 2 puddles, am going to have to hire a carpet shampooer or get rid of the carpet.

We have not noticed any increase on walks at all.

i think its a trip to the vets on if it continues tomorrow

This might be a stupid or ignorant question but how do you get a urine sample? Asking more for general knowledge although I imagine OP will find it hard to get a sample if her dog isn't predictable right now in its toileting

I use a clean frying pan. The more hygeinic may well use other things. I follow the dog nonchalently around the garden and then whip it into position when they are past the point of no return. Then transfer to a clean jar.

I understand that pee that has little or no smell can be a marker for a kidney infection because the dilution is important. The kidneys should be producing nice strong urine, even when a dog is well hydrated, wee that is more dilute than the norm is a cause for concern. Jake has just finished a 10 day course of Synulox for a UTI so we have recent experience. He showed no other sign of infection, other than peeing more often than usual.

I just used a clean saucer and wait until they are going then just slip it under from behind her so she doesn’t notice. Then you can just transfer it to a suitable container to take to the vet. I used a small Tupperware container with a leak proof lid.

I've made a note of that technique now, I wonder what the dog thinks is going on!

Boys are easier to collect from than girls, that's for sure. ?

I’m guessing it’s just my greyhound boys that look at me affrontedly and say ‘do you MIND we are trying to do our manly (dogly?) thing here’ then??

Absolute ? to using a frying pan from me I’m afraid, a clean Chinese takeaway container that has been through the dishwasher does just fine ?

But it's so much easier with a handle! And pee is sterile. My OH does get a bit grumpy so I just don't tell him.

Just wait until you need to collect a stool sample with a lolly stick, that'll get you some funny looks ?

I guess the stool sample will just be sitting there at least, but trying to catch a urine sample before it absorbs into the ground must make the dog wonder what exactly is going on!

Yeh, sat there, steaming, in long grass, with the dog pulling on the lead trying to get away whilst you are on your knees wearing a pair of marigolds, with a lolly stick and a Tupperware container, scooping a bit out, and then smearing into the container. Dog looking displeased and disgusted, attracting the attention of passers-by! ???

I rember, many years ago, my dad running round the garden behind a lab bitch, with a toy pan which he tried to get under her at the correct time, the bitch was most affronted :D She thought that dad had gone mad!

I meant more in your back garden, out in the public is a different story but if you urgently need a sample what else can you do! I'd just love to know what a dog thinks you are doing when you put it in a tupperware box.
