Hello fellow forumers, need to pick your brains.

Mr M has taken to munching on the fence posts now:rolleyes:, seems to be something he’s must of started doing just lately as I noticed the posts this morning and there’s quite a dramatic difference, not actually caught him in the act however, so I can only presume he’s doing it while he’s waiting for me (as he knows what times I go down) or during the day if he’s getting bored, he may have had the occasion nibble before but judging from the posts now it’s obviously something he’s doing a lot off now.

It’s not like there isn’t enough grazing and I do what I can to keep him occupied with a bit of hay on a morning and evening (although I’ve had to cut this down to prevent him putting too much weight on), bringing him in for a groom/pamper and giving him his snack ball in the field.

But he is the type of horse that needs to be doing something and he does like to mouth and fiddle with things with his mouth. I think what may have triggered the fence chewing more is because he’s on his own but it’s either him munching fence posts or taking chunks out of some other poor horse.

So it looks like I’ll have to buy something to smear on the posts, it’s not just the tops of the posts either, it’s actually all the way down too.

Any recommendations for a good product? I've not had a fence chewer before and I've never had a cribber/windsucker before so this unknown turf to me.

I’ve heard that mixing horse dung with a bit of water brushed can be a cheap deterrent however I think I’d rather buy something that works before I resort to those kind of tactics, besides I can only imagine it will rain off and then attract flies during warm spells.

Thank you :)

We used cribbox on fence posts for one of the fence chewers at the yard which worked :)

Used it as I had it spare from trying to stop my boy cribbing (didn't work)

Arr right super, is that the actual make of that particular product or is that just what they call it but you can get different makes of it?

I have found that which ever piece of fence you put cribbox ect on they then leave alone but move on to another bit and ruin that ! To stop it compleatly had you thought of putting electric tape along the top rail to keep him away, also had you thought to put a nice fresh piece of wood in the field for him to "play "with, perhaps he will focus on that and leave the fence alone.A field lick may work aswell.

We paint our fences either creosote sub cross engine oil or just engine oil.

We had a fence chewer a livery would stand all day chewing had to ask her to leave . It ate through one whole rail in a day.
Cribox or paint fencing . or put electric fencing up in front of it or on top.,

Thanks for the replies and ideas. :)

Plan is to bob my own electric fencing up in front of the fence but for the time being I'll try the poo painting idea.
